본 연구는 원만성이 용서 동기에 미치는 영향에 있어 인지적 공감과 정서적 공감의 작용순서와 관련한 매커니즘을 확인하였다. 대학생 270명에게 원만성을 평가하는 성격 척도(HEXACO), 인지적 공감 척도, 정서적 공감 척도, 용서 척도 질문지를 실시한 후, 구조방정식 모형을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 성격 특성인 원만성은 그 자체로 용서 동기로 이어지는 것이 아니라, 인지적 공감과 정서적 공감의 매개 작용을 통해 용서 동기로 이어졌다. 그 과정에서 인지적 공감과 정서적 공감의 작용 순서를 제시한 여러 매개 모형 중 인지적 공감이 정서적 공감에 선행하는 Davis 이론에 기반한 완전 매개 모형의 적합도가 가장 높았다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 논의에서 용서 프로그램 구성의 방향성 및 추후 연구 과제를 제안하였다.

This study is aimed at reviewing previous empirical research on the relation between forgiveness and personality, and exploring empathy mechanisms influencing the relation. Forgiveness theorists have suggested that personality predict forgiveness motivation and previously a relationship between the Big Five factor of agreeableness. In this study, explore the influence of agreeableness on forgiveness motivation and to examine the mediating effects of Davis empathy model in this relationship. To examine the hypothesis, data were drawn from 261 undergraduate students completed measures of agreeableness, cognitive empathy, affective empathy, forgiveness motivation and analyzed through Structured Equational Modeling(SEM). According to the results the model hypothesizing complete mediating effects of Davis empathy model showed superior fit. Therefore, agreeableness affected forgiveness motivation by sequential increasing cognitive empathy and affective empathy.
