본 연구는 Bowen 가족체계이론의 기본가정을 바탕으로 노년기 부부의 자기분화와 결혼적응 수준의 차이 및 자기분화 수준이 결혼적응에 미치는 영향을 검증하는데 초점을 두었다. 이를 위해 노년기부부 271쌍을 대상으로 자료를 수집하였고, 구조방정식모형을 통해 이론적 모형을 검증하였다. 본 연구결과를 요약하면, 첫째, 전체 자기분화수준에는 부부간 차이가 없었으나 하위요인 중 자기입장은 남편이 부인보다 높게 나타났고, 결혼적응도 남편이 부인보다 높았다. 둘째, 자기분화수준별 부부집단에 따른 결혼적응은 자기분화가 부부 모두 높은 집단과 남편 낮고 부인 높은 집단의 결혼적응이 가장 높았고, 부부 모두 낮은 집단이 가장 낮게 나타났다. 셋째, 부부 모두 자기분화 수준은 결혼적응과 정적 상관이 있었고, 정서적 반응 및 자기입장과 결혼비교수준간의 상관관계 정도는 남편이 부인보다 더 높았다. 넷째, 노년기 부부의 자기분화가 결혼적응에 미치는 영향에 대한 이론적모형을 검증한 결과, 남편과 부인 모두 본인의 자기분화가 본인의 결혼적응에 영향을 미쳤고, 부인의 자기분화가 남편의 결혼적응에 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구 결과는 우리나라 노년기 부부의 결혼적응을 설명하는데 Bowen 이론이 적용될 수 있음을 확인하였고, 부부인 쌍을 한 단위로 분석함으로써 가족체계이론의 기본 가정을 경험적으로 분석하였다는 측면에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

The major purpose of this study was to empirically test the theoretical model of the effect of self-differentiation on the marital adjustment among elderly couples. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaire method with elderly couple as a pair. Structural equation modeling method was used to test the model, making the couple the unit of analysis. Results showed that there was no significant difference in the level of total self-differentiation score between husbands and wives but that the level of marital adjustment were higher for husbands than for wives. In addition, both husbands` and wives` marital adjustment were positively correlated with self-differentiation. Finally, husbands` and wives` self-differentiation had significant influences on their own marital adjustment, while wives` self-differentiation influenced husbands` marital satisfaction but husbands` self-differentiation did not affect wives` marital adjustment. Results were discussed in terms of implications for therapy and/or education with elderly couples and for future research.
