Freud는 신과 종교를 부정하고 배격한 철저한 무신론자였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 언제나 자신이 부정한 신과 종교라는 주제에 몰두했으며 생의 마지막 순간까지도 이에 매달릴 정도로 강박적이었다. 그 결과 그는 방대하고 논란이 많은 종교론을 유산으로 남겼고, 이는 상담 및 심리치료자들의 태도와 내담자들의 종교경험을 이해하는데 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구는 신의 문제와 종교에 관련된 프로이트의 원저들과 편지들 및 관련 연구들을 토대로 하여 그의 기저의 심리적 역동들과 종교론을 분석적으로 고찰하고자 하였다. 특히 프로이트 자신의 Oedipus 갈등을 비롯한 가족배경과 성장사, 그리고 당시의 반유대주의적 문화를 둘러싼 심리적 역동들과 전쟁의 영향 등을 함께 고려하여 그의 신에 대한 강박과 종교론을 이해하고자 하였다. 그리고 이러한 고찰이 종교적인 내담자를 만나는 상담자에게 주는 함의를 살펴보았다.

Sigmund Freud was an atheist to the bone but obsessed with God and religion through and up to the very end of his life. As a result, his legacies of rich yet full of contradictions and controversies influenced psychotherapists in their attitude on clients` religious experiences mainly in a negative way. This study explores Freud`s underlying psychodynamics and his works on religion as well, on the basis of his writings including monographs, books, letters and related researches. His thoughts on God and religion could be understood and appraised properly when considering not only his own Oedipal complex and family background but also his psychological conflicts related to jewish identity, anti-Semitism and war. Implications for the counseling of religious clients are given.
