본 연구는 우리 사회의 중추적 입장에 서 있는 중년 남성들이 겪는 위기감을 알아보기 위해 자신이 지각한 자기의식 및 성역할 스트레스가 중년의 위기와 어떠한 상관관계가 있으며, 중년의 위기감에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구대상은 40세~60세의 남성 400명으로 하였다. 본 연구의 자료 분석은 상관분석과 중다회귀분석, 그리고 이원변량분석이 사용되었다. 본 연구를 통해 나타난 결과를 요약 하면 다음과 같다. 중년 남성이 지각한 자기의식과 성역할 스트레스가 중년의 위기에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인 되었다. 개인적 자기의식은 중년의 정서적 위기, 개별화 과정, 결혼 불만족도에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 대중적 자기의식은 결혼 불만족도에 높은 영향을 미치며, 사회적 불안이 높을 경우 능력과 활력의 상실에 높은 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 성역할 스트레스는 자기의식의 하위 변인인 개인적 자기의식, 대중적 자기의식, 사회적 불안과 상호 작용 하여 중년의 위기감을 증가 또는 감소시키고 있다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of self-consciousness and gender role stress and mid-life crisis of middle-aged male and to explore the effects of self-consciousness and gender role stress upon mid-life crisis and to confirm interaction effect of self-consciousness and gender role stress upon mid-life crisis. A questionnaire consisting of general facts survey, self-consciousness scale, gender role stress scale and mid-life crisis scale was administered to 400 government officials. The data analysis were used correlation analysis, multiple regression and two-way ANOVA analysis. The result of this study could be summarized as follows. The effect of Self-consciousness and gender role stress showed effects about middle-life crisis of middle-aged male. Personal self-consciousness influenced emotional crisis, individualization process, marriage dissatisfaction. Public selfconsciousness effected on marriage dissatisfaction and social anxiety influenced loss of ability and vitality. Also, gender role stress influenced mid-life crisis. The interaction between gender role stress and low rank variables of self-consciousness (i.e., personal self-consciousness, public self-consciousness, social anxiety) influenced mid-life crisis. Finally, theoretical implications of the results were discussed. In addition, practical implications were presented. The limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
