본 연구의 목적은 고등학생들의 학교중도탈락 후 재입학하기까지의 과정을 이해하고 이를 설명하는 실체이론을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 고등학교를 중도탈락하고 재입학한 청소년들 중에서 학교적응이 안정적인 8명의 청소년을 대상으로 그들이 경험한 학교중도탈락 후 재입학 과정을 인터뷰하였으며 근거이론방법을 적용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 분석결과 122개의 개념과 46개의 하위범주, 18개의 범주가 나타났고, 학교중도탈락 후 재입학 과정에 관한 패러다임 모형이 도출되었다. 고등학생들의 학교중도탈락 후 재입학 과정에서 나타난 중심현상은 낙오된 느낌이었으며, 인과적 상황에 해당하는 자퇴의 배경은 학교에서 마음이 멀어짐, 전학무산으로 나타났다. 맥락적 상황은 일시적 해방감, 기존 또래 관계의 변화, 가족으로 인한 부담감, 대안 활동 모색, 자기관리 실패로 나타났다. 중재적 상황은 개인외 변인, 중요한 타인들의 복교 권유, 개인내 변인으로 나타났으며, 작용/상호작용 전략은 개인내 측면의 변화, 관계 측면의 변화, 행동 측면의 변화로 나타났다. 결과는 학교적응의 어려움을 극복하려 함, 자신의 선택에 만족함, 가족과의 관계 호전, 미래를 설계함으로 나타났다. 또한 고등학교 중도탈락 후 재입학 과정은 모라토리움단계, 각성단계, 선택단계, 행동단계, 성장단계로 나타났으며, 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 나타난 핵심범주는 자각과 선택을 통한 성장이었다. 본 연구 결과는 청소년들의 경험을 통해 학교중도탈락 후 재입학하기까지 과정과 이에 영향을 미치는 조건들을 통합적으로 이해함으로써 학교를 떠나려고 하거나 학교를 떠나있는 청소년들을 지원하는 방향과 방법을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to understand the High School drop-outs` readmission process and to suggest the practical theory about this process. 8 reentrants who were stable on school adjustment were interviewed, and their experiences on the readmission process were analysed based on the grounded theory. The analysed Data resulted in a paradigm of 122 concepts, 46 sub-categories, and 18 categories. The phenomenon was ``the feeling of failure``, and causal conditions were ``drifting apart from school`` and ``the failure of transferring to another school`` The context were ``temporary release``, ``changes in previous relations with peers``, ``burden of family``, ‘exploring alternative activity`` and ``failure to self-monitoring``. The intervening conditions were ``external factors``, ‘encouragement of significantly meaningful others``, and ``internal factors``. The identified actions/interactions were ‘the changes of internal aspects, relational aspects, and behavioral aspects``. The results were ``struggling to cope with the difficulties``, ``being content with their choices`` and ``made better terms with family members``, and ‘even had future dream``. And the High School drop-outs`` readmission process have gone through five stages; the stage of moratorium, that of awareness, choice, behavior and growth. and they especially had grown up through awareness and choice.
