학생의 심리적 문제의 해결뿐만 아니라 발달과 성장을 위한 학교상담의 영역에서 초등학교 담임교사의 역할은 매우 중요하다. 초등학교 담임교사가 수행하는 상담이 보다 효과적으로 이루어지기 위해서는 교사가 경험하는 상담의 어려움이 무엇인지에 대한 체계적이고 경험적인 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 초등학교 담임교사가 지각한 학교상담의 어려움이 무엇인지를 개념도(conceptmapping) 방법을 사용하여 심도 있게 탐색하였다. 초등학교 담임교사들을 대상으로 학교상담의 어려움이 무엇인지 면접한 뒤, 진술문 목록을 개발하고, 이를 평정자극으로 제시하여 교사들에게 각 진술문을 분류 및 평가하게 하여 개념도를 완성하였다. 연구결과 초등학교 담임교사가 지각하는 학교상담의 어려움은 2개 차원 상에서 6개의 군집으로 위치하였다. 교사들은 6개의 군집에 대해서 달리공감하고 있었고, 개념도 상의 군집 위치에 따라 의미를 달리 해석할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 초등학교 담임교사가 상담을 하는데 어떠한 어려움을 지각하고 있는지를 2차원 상에서 파악할 수 있었으며, 초등교사 상담활동의 목표 및 한계에 대한 논의가 필요함을 제안했다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 결과는 향후 초등학교 담임교사를 위한 상담교육의 방향에 시사점을 제공했다.

School counseling in elementary school is important in terms of helping students deal with psychological problems effectively and develop psychologically. It is needed to investigate what difficulties elementary school teachers have for counseling students effectively. This study studied the difficulties perceived by elementary school teachers using concept mapping method. Concept mapping was developed by three steps, interviewing with teachers, identifying statements, and making them evaluate and classify each statements. As a result, there were six groups perceived by teachers. In addition, teachers agreed with each group differently and each group has different meaning, considering the location at the concept map. This study identified what difficulties elementary school teacher has as a counselor, what is goals of counseling provided by teachers, and what is needed for counseling education for elementary school teachers in the future.
