본 연구는 사관후보생의 스트레스와 우울 간의 관계에서 자아존중감의 조절효과와 매개효과를 알아보고자 하였다. A지역 B부대의 사관후보생 471명을 대상으로 자료를 수집하였다. 선행연구와 관련 이론의 결과를 바탕으로 스트레스를 독립변인으로, 자아존중감을 매개변인과 조절변인으로, 우울을 종속변인으로 관계모형을 설정하여 그 효과를 검증하였다. 스트레스와 우울 간의 관계에서 자아존중감의 조절효과를 검증하기 위해 회귀분석을 실시하였고, 매개효과를 검증하기 위해 구조방정식모델 접근법을 사용하였다. 본 연구에서 밝혀진 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사관후보생의 스트레스, 우울, 자아존중감 간에 통계적으로 유의한 상관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 사관후보생의 스트레스와 우울의 관계가 자아존중감의 수준에 따라 다른 것으로 나타나, 스트레스와 우울 간의 관계에서 자아존중감이 조절변인의 역할을 하고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 특히 높은 스트레스 상황에서 높은 자아존중감은 스트레스의 영향을 완충하고, 낮은 자아존중감은 우울을 증가시키는 취약성요인으로 나타났다. 셋째, 스트레스는 직접적으로 우울에 영향을 미침과 동시에 자아존중감을 통해 간접적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 스트레스는 자아존중감을 저하시키고, 저하된 자아존중감이 우울 수준을 높이는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이에 기본군사훈련 중인 사관후보생의 스트레스와 우울 간의 관계에서 자아존중감은 조절 변인과 매개 변인으로 동시에 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 의의와 한계점에 대해 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating and moderating effects of self-esteem on the relationship between stress and depression among Korean officer candidates. The subjects were 471 officer candidates who were participating in basic military training. The instruments used in the study were the assessments of stress, depression, and self-esteem. The findings were as follows; (1) The correlation coefficients of the study variables were statistically significant.; (2) The relation between stress and depression varied according to the level of self-esteem; thus, self-esteem acted as a moderating variable. (3) Stress had direct effects on depression and it also had indirect effects on depression mediated by self-esteem. That is, stress lowered self-esteem, which led to higher level of depression. In this study, it was shown that self-esteem acts both as a moderating and mediating variable between stress and depression. Based on these results, theoretical and practical implications as well as suggestions for future research in this area were discussed.
