This study was conducted to explore adolescents` coping styles, The participants in this study were 1,069 adolescents attending junior or senior high schools located in Seoul or Kyung-Gi. A factor analysis yielded six factors representing general coping styles used by adolescents. This study examined gender- and grade-differences in the use of each of the six coping styles. It also investigated differences in coping styles among adolescents who differed by the extent of delinquency experiences and identification with school. The results showed that female adolescents were more likely to cope with stresses by seeking social relationships, by working hard and trying to solve problems, or by seeking religious help than were males. In contrast, male adolescents were more likely to actively seek help or avoid problems than were females. As grades increased, adolescents more frequently used ``passive coping,`` ``actively seek help; and ``seek religious help.`` However, grade-differences in the use of ``seek social relationships,`` ``hard work-problem solving,`` and ``avoid the problem`` were not found significant. Adolescents having a few delinquency experiences and a nigh sense of identification with school were more likely to work hard and try to solve problems, and were less likely to passively cope with stresses and avoid problems than were other adolescents. Regardless of the extent of delinquency experiences, adolescents with a high sense of identification with school were more likely to seek social relationships and actively seek help than Were those with a low sense of identification with school. In addition, out of adolescents having many delinquency experiences, those with a nigh sense of identification with school were more likely to seek social relationships, actively seek help, and work hard and solve problems than were those with a low sense of identification with school. These findings imply that not every delinquent adolescent relies on dysfunctional coping styles. Thus, it would be necessary for youth counselors to understand the variety of coping styles among delinquent adolescents. Finally, limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
