본 문헌 연구의 목적은 청각에 장애가 있는 이들은 진정으로 특수집단인가를 알아보고, 상담자들에게 이들에 대한 좀 더 정확하고 폭넓은 이해를 제공하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 국내·외 관련 문헌들을 수집 분석하였고, 그 중에서 특별히 Holcomb(1997)이 제시한 정체성 유형이 중심이 되었다. 문헌들을 통해 청각에 장애가 있는 이들에 대한 태도에 변화가 있음을 알게되었다. 변화란 지금까지 논쟁의 초점이 되어왔던 청각에 장애가 있는 이들은 장애집단인가 아니면 소수문화집단인가 라는 집단 차원의 접근에서 집단 내 다양성 즉, 집단을 구성하고 있는 서로 다른 개인으로 그 관심이 점차로 이동하고 있음을 뜻한다. 연구 결과 이들 집단은 서로 다른 조건을 가진 개인들로 구성되어 있어, 그들 내부에는 다양성과 이질성이 분명히 존재한다는 것이 발견되었다. 그리고 이 이질성은 농문화에의 노출 정도, 주 의사소통양식, 농인에 대한 태도 등을 통해 확인되었다. 청각에 장애가 있는 이들에 대한 태도는 중요하면서 민감한 문제일 것이다. 왜냐하면 그들에 대한 태도가 어떠한가에 따라 총체적 복지 서비스의 방법과 궁극적 목적이 달라질 수 있기 때문이다. 그리고 그 중요성은 상담 장면에서도 역시 마찬가지일 것이다. 이 연구는 상담 수요자의 확대 그리고 우리나라에서는 낯선 상담 수요자에 대한 기초적인 연구라는 점에서 의의를 지닐 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to review previous reports, to know wether those with hearing impairment are really an exceptional group or not, and to provide counselors with more accurate and informative understanding related to them. For this purpose, previous reports are collected and reviewed. The focus will be on identity types suggested by Holcomb(1977). Through the research, it is founded that perception for people with hearing impairment is moving from group, disability or social-cultural minority, to individual. It is important to know how to treat people with hearing impairment. Because the means of total welfare service and the actual purpose are changed according to the attitude to them and it is likely that its means is applied to the attitude in counseling. This research would be contributed to expand new counseling consumers and begin a counseling study on unknown consumers who are a few in Korea.
