최근 학교문제의 심각성이 사회 전반의 관심을 불러일으키면서 인성교육의 부재로 인한 한국교육의 정체성과 그 위기에 관한 논의가 확산되고 있다. 이러한 교육 위기의 대안으로 학교상담자가 해야 할 역할이 그 어느 때보다도 중요한 때이다. 그러나 이와 같은 사회적 요구에도 불구하고 현재 각급 학교에서 이루어지고 있는 학교상담활동은 매우 미진한 상태이다. 학교상담이 활성화되지 않는 원인으로 연구자들이 다양한 이유를 제시하고 있지만 학교현장에 적합한 효과적인 학교상담모델의 부재가 그 근본 원인이라고 할 수 있다. 이 글에서는 학교상담자의 역할을 단순하게 기술하기보다는, 개인상담을 중심으로 한 전통적인 심리치료모델과 학급단위 상담활동 프로그램을 중심으로 한 학교상담모델을 비교하여 분석하였다. 또한 학교상담자의 주중 근무시간 중에서 상담활동으로 사용 가능한 시간을 토대로 그들이 담당해야 할 여덟 가지 역할을 제시하였다. 이 역할들에는 개인상담, 소규모 집단상담, 학급단위 상담활동 프로그램, 컨설팅, 또래상담자 프로그램, 교사조력자 프로그램, 상담활동 평가, 프로그램개발 및 행정업무가 포함되어진다. 이 여덟 가지 활동들에 대한 탐색을 통해 현재 우리나라의 학교상황에 적합한 효과적인 학교상담모델을 제안하였다. 이러한 시도들이 위기에 처한 우리나라 학교교육의 현실과 학교상담의 발전에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 수 있음이 또한 논의되었다.
Recently, issues related to emerging problems in schools have been a topic of discussion in Korean society. It has continuously been argued that this crisis in our educational identity has emerged from an absence of character education in our schools. School counseling and the role of school counselors have become an important possible solution to this educational crisis. Despite the increasing need for school counseling in our society, current school counseling programs are underdeveloped. Previous researchers have pointed out several reasons that school counseling programs in Korea are underdeveloped. The main reason is the absence of effective school counseling models that can reflect the reality of the actual school system. This article investigates a school counseling model based on a classroom counseling program and compares it to a traditional therapy model, based on individual therapy. In addition, the eight roles of the school counselor are proposed within a weekly schedule. These roles involve individual counseling, group counseling, a classroom counseling program, consultation, a peer counseling program, a teacher as facilitator program, counseling program evaluation, and program development and coordination. Through exploring these eight roles in detail, the most effective school counseling model is proposed. The positive influences of this new model, on the development of school counseling and education in Korea, are also discussed.
