본 연구는 노인의 생의 의미를 Q방법론을 통해 파악하고자 한 연구이다. 먼저 문헌연구와 노인들과의 면접을 통해 노인의 생의 의미를 나타낸다고 생각되는 총 121개 문항을 추출한 후 수차례 논의를 거쳐 최종 23개의 Q진술문이 채택되었다. 이 진술문은 카드로 만들어 연구대상자로 하여금 7점 척도의 Q분포도에 강제 배분하도록 한 후 생의 의미에 대한 개인별 심층면접을 실시하였다. 연구대상들의 카드 배분 결과는 PCQ 프로그램을 이용하여 통계 처리하였다. 연구대상은 60세 이상의 남녀 노인으로 참여를 수락한 29명(남 9명, 여 20명)이었다. 연구결과 대상자들의 생의 의미인식은 4가지 유형(제 1유형: 수용적 가족관계 지향 형, 제 2유형: 현실불만족 꿈 추구 형, 제 3유형: 신앙심을 통한 현실극복 형, 제 4유형: 독립적 과업지향 형)으로 분류되었다. 이러한 연구결과는 대상자들이 동의하거나 동의하지 않은 진술, 그들의 일반적 특성 및 심층면접 결과와 본 연구의 개념적 틀을 구성하는 4가지 요소(자신과 삶에 대한 인식 및 수용, 창조적 가치실현, 경험적 가치실현, 과거와 현재 삶에 대한 만족)와 관련지어 해석되고 논의되었다. 노인의 생의 의미인식 제 1유형은 자신과 삶에 대한 수용도와 과거와 현재 삶에 대한 만족도가 비교적 높은 편이며 가족관계를 중심으로 한 경험적 가치실현을 통해 의미를 실현하고자 하는 유형이었다. 제 2유형은 자신과 삶에 대해 수용하지 못하고 현재와는 다른 삶을 원하는 사람들로서 과거와 현재 삶에 대한 만족도가 다소 낮은 편이었으나 현재는 가족관계를 중심으로 한 경험적 가치실현을 통해 의미를 실현하고자 하는 유형이었다. 제 3유형은 자신과 삶에 대한 수용도가 낮은 편이며 신앙심을 통해 어려움을 극복해왔던 경험이 있는 사람들로서 신앙을 가장 중요하게 생각하고 신과의 만남이라는 경험적 가치실현방식을 통해 생의 의미를 추구하는 사람들이었다. 독립적 과업지향 형은 자신과 삶에 대한 수용도와 과거와 현재 삶에 대한 만족도는 높은 편이며 창조적 가치실현을 통해 생의 의미를 실현하고자하는 사람들로서 위 세 유형과는 다른 유형이며 모두 남자들이었다. 이상과 같이 분류된 유형에 따라 그들의 생의 의미를 높일 수 있도록 돕는 상담전략이 논의되었다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand types of meaning in life of elderly by the Q-methodological approach. Through the literature review and interview with 20 elderly, 121 items were collected. After discussion among reseachers, 23 statements concerning meaning in life were selected. 29 elderly were chosen as subjects for this study. The subjects sorted 23 statements using the principle of Forced Nomal Distribution. The data were analysed by PCQ program. As a results, there are four types(1st type : accepted and family-relationship oriented type, 2nd type : unfinished dream seeking type, 3rd type : overcoming difficulities by religion type, 4th type : independant and task oriented type) of meaning in life of elderly. The ``accepted and family-relationship oriented type`` accept self and life and persue meaning in life by experiential value realization through family-relationship. The ``unfinished dream seeking type`` also search meaning in life by experiential value realization through family-relationship but they are unsatisfied themselves and their life. They are seeking for becoming the other person. The ``overcoming difficulities by religion type`` persue meaning in life by experiential value realization through faith of God. They have experiences overcome difficulities by religion. The ``independant and task oriented type`` wish for meaning in life by creative value realization through their work and their independant life.
