본 연구는 심리치료자들의 계발을 위한 국제합동연구 (CRN: ISDP)의 한 부분으로서 (Bae, Joo, & Orlinsky, 2003; Joo, Bae, & Orlinsky, 2003; Orlinsky et al., 1999), 한국의 심리치료자들이 보고한 심리치료자로서의 동기를 살펴보는 예비연구이다. Hill, Thompson and Williams의 합의의 질적 연구(Consensual Qualitative Research: CQR) 방법을 사용하여, 이 합동연구에서 사용하는 공통핵심질문지중 치료자의 동기부분을 알아보는 열린 질문에 반응한 69명의 한국심리치료자들의 자료를 근거로 한다. 어떠한 동기로 인해 심리치료자가 되기로 하였는지, 현재 치료를 하면서 발견한 동기는 무엇인지, 심리치 료자로서 더욱 발달하기 위해 앞으로의 몇 년 동안 어떤 목표를 갖고 있는지를 알아보았는데, 이를 각각 과거와 현재, 미래 동기 영역으로 나누어 보았다. 이에 9개의 주제가 추출되었는데, 과거 동기 영역에는 1) 자신의 문제, 2)학문과 인간에 대한 관심, 3)우연히, 추천으로 치료자가 되기로 하였다고 보고하였고, 현재 동기 영역에는 4) 자신에 대한 긍정적인 점들, 5) 자신에 대한 부정적인 문제, 6) 심리치료의 효과와 중요성, 7) 이론과 인간, 질병에 대한 인식을 발견하게 되었고, 미래 동기 영역에는 8) 훌륭한 치료자가 되고자, 9) 좋은 인간이 되고자하는 것으로 나타났다. 결과를 바탕으로 심리치료자들의 발달을 위한 제안과 미래 연구에 대한 방안들을 제시하였다.

This preliminary study examines the motivational themes of psychotherapists reported by therapists in South Korea. Open-ended responses from 69 Korean psychotherapists from the Collaborative Research Network: International Study of Development of Psychotherapists (CRN: ISDP) (Bae, Joo, & Orlinsky, 2003; Joo, Bae, & Orlinsky, 2003; Orlinsky et al., 1999) was analyzed by using the consensual qualitative research (CQR) methodology developed by Hill, Thompson, and Williams (1997). Nine themes emerged from three domains of the past, present and future motivations of psychotherapists. In the Past Motivation Domain, themes such as 1) Personal and self-related issues, 2) Interest in theory and human mind, 3) Accidentally or Recommended by others were drawn; in the Present Motivation Domain, themes were 4) Positive self-related characteristics, 5) Negative self-related issues, 6) Belief in psychotherapy, 7) Understanding theories, human, and illness; and finally in the Future Motivation Domain, 8) To become a Great Therapist and 9) To become a Good Person were determined. Several suggestions for the development of psychotherapists are offered.
