상담실제에서 숙제부여는 상당히 많은 상담자들에 의해 자주 시도되는 방법으로 관찰되지만, 그 방법의 활용빈도 그리고 그 방법의 구체적 절차나 기법 등에 관한 연구결과는 찾아보기 어렵다. 본 연구는 이 숙제부여가 우리나라 상담실제에서 얼마나 활용되고 있는가를 알아보기 위하여 수행되었다. 분석대상으로는 1990년부터 2004년까지 대학상담 기관, 청소년상담 기관, 상담관련 학회 등 다양한 상황의 사례협의회에서 발표된 총83개의 사례보고서(총 969회기)를 수집하여 사용하였다. 분석은 숙제부여가 활용된 사례 수와 숙제가 부여된 회기 수, 두 측면에서 이루어졌으며 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 총 83개의 분석사례 중, 1회 이상 숙제를 부여한 사례는 53개였다(63.9%). 이를 상담기관, 내담자 연령층, 상담연도에 따라 살펴본 결과, ① 상담기관별로는 청소년상담 기관의 사례는 22개 중 18개(81.8%), 대학상담 기관의 사례는 57개 중 33개(57.9%), 유료상담기관의 사례는 4개 중 2개(50.0%)의 사례에서 숙제부여가 활용되었음을 보여주었다. ② 내담자의 연령층으로 구분해 보았을 때, 청소년 내담자 사례는 8개 중 6개(75.0%), 대학생이나 대학원생 내담자 사례는 57개 중 34개(59.6%), 일반인 내담자 사례는 18개 중 13개(72.2%)의 사례에서 숙제부여가 활용되었음을 보여주었다. ③상담연도별로 보았을 때, 1990 1994년의 사례는 28개 중 12개(42.9%), 1995 1999의 사례는 24개 중 18개(75%), 2000 2004의 사례는 31개 중 23개(74.2%)에서 숙제부여가 활용된 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 90년대 초반(42.9%)에 비해 90년대 중반과 후반(75.0%) 그리고 2000년대 초(74.2%)로 올수록 숙제부여의 활용 비율이 더 높음을 볼 수 있었다. 2) 분석의 단위를 사례가 아닌 회기로 보았을 때, ① 연구 대상 상담 사례의 총 회기수(969회기)에 대한 숙제부여 회기 수(131회기)의 퍼센트는 13.5%로 나타났다. ② 한 사례당 숙제가 부여된 회기의 퍼센트(한 사례 내 숙제제시 회기 수/한 사례 내 총 회기 수×100)를 살펴본 결과, 숙제부여 비율은 10%이상 30% 미만에 집중되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 전체 53개 사례 중 29개로, 54.7%를 차지하고 있었다. 이러한 연구결과에 기초하여 본 연구의 시사점 및 제한점 그리고 향후 연구주제를 논의하였다.

The use of homework assignment as a counseling technique is frequently observed in counseling practice and theory. However, it is rare to find the research concerning the frequency and procedure of homework assignment. The present study was conducted to survey the use of counseling homework assignment in Korea. Data were collected 83 case reports of case conference at counseling centers and associations(1990-2004). Analysis was performed on two dimensions: the number of homework assignment case and session. The result was as follows: 1) The homework assigned was 53 cases(63.9%) among the 83 total cases. It was analyzed by counseling setting, client`s age, counseling year. ① As for the counseling setting, the number of homework assignment cases of the youth counseling centers was 18(81.8%), that of the college counseling centers was 33(57.9%), that of the pay counseling centers was 2(50.0%). ② As for the client`s age, the number of homework assignment cases of adolescent client cases was 6(75.0%), that of the undergraduate and graduate client cases was 34(59.6%), that of the adult client cases was 13(72.2%). ③ As for the counseling year, the cases in 1995-1999 (75.0%) showed the most proportion, then followed by the cases in 2000-2004(74.2%) and 1990-1994(42.9%). 2) ① Total homework assignment session percent(the number of homework assignment sessions in total cases/ the number of total sessions in total cases×100) was 13.5%. ② Homework assignment percent per case (the number of homework assignment sessions in a case/ the number of total sessions in a case×100) indicated that the most frequent homework assignment percent was 10%-30%(29 case, 54.7%). On the basis of these findings, some tentative implications were discussed and suggestions for future studies were also presented.
