본 연구에서는 급변하는 직업환경에서 요구하는 새로운 일의 개념에 주목하여, 일에 대한 대학생들의 개념을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 경북지역의 한 국립대 학생 192명에게 일을 하거나 직업을 갖는 것에 대한 각자의 생각을 자유롭게 기술하도록 하여, 이 서술자료에 귀납적 분석방법과 합의적 질적 연구법을 적용하여 총 4개의 범주와 13개의 하위범주를 도출하였다. 도출된 범주와 하위범주는 (1) 일의 대가(경제적보상, 사회적 지위나 인정) (2) 심리적 만족과 자기증진(심리적 욕구 충족, 흥미나 적성에 맞는 활동, 자아실현이나 자기개발, 전문가로 발전하는 기회) (3) 일의 속성(사회에 대한 기여, 당연히 해야 하는 활동, 중요한 선택, 즐거운 활동, 힘든 활동) (4) 삶의 필수적인 활동(삶의 중요한 부분, 소명)이다. 참여자들의 일의 개념은 다양하고, 참여자들 간에도 개인차가 발견되었으나, 전반적으로 일의 개인적 중요성은 큰 비중을 차지하지만, 사회적 중요성이나 일의 속성에 대한 인식은 미흡한 것으로 나타났다.

In recognition of new conceptions of work required for the rapidly changing work environment, this study attempted to explore conceptions of work among university students in Korea. To achieve this purpose, 192 students attending a national university located in Kyungpook province were asked to write their thoughts and personal meanings concerning working or obtaining an occupation. Inductive method and consensual qualitative analytic method were applied on these narrative data and a total of 4 categories and 13 subcategories were obtained. These are (1) outcomes of work (financial income, social status or recognition) (2) psychological satisfaction and self-enhancement (psychological need fulfillment, activities suited for individual interests or aptitudes, self-realization or self-development, opportunities for growing as a professional) (3) attributes of work (contribution to the society, duty or obligation, an important choice, pleasant activities, hard labor) (4) an indispensible activity in life (an essential part of life, calling). Although conceptions of work among the students were found to be complex and varied, manifesting individual differences, the individual importance of work was given more significance compared with the societal importance of work and the attributes of work.
