This study investigated the impact of adolescents` perception of mother-adolescent communication on their self-esteem and depression compared middle school students with high school students. For the purpose of the study, survey was conducted and 251 students who registered at middle and high school in Daegu participated. The questionnaire included the demographic information, parent-child communication, self-esteem and depression. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one way ANAOVA, and multiple linear regression were conducted by utilizing Spss Win 11.5. The result of this study indicated that there were statistically significant differences between middle school students and high school students in their levels of mother-child communication, self-esteem and depression. Middle school students showed higher levels of communication and self-esteem and lower level of depression than high school students. Secondly, there were statistically significant differences between positive mother-child communication group and negative communication group in adolescents` self-esteem and depression. Adolescents who have positive communication with mothers reported relatively higher levels of self-esteem, and lower levels of depression than those negative ones. Finally, mother-child communication was a significant predictor in explaining adolescents` levels of self-esteem(31%) and depression(27%), while the developmental difference between middle school and high school only explained 4% of self-esteem and depression. These findings provided the information of the differences in mother-adolescent communication, self- esteem and depression between middle school students and high school students and implied the necessity of establishing different counseling and service approaches to adolescents based on developmental stage. Recommendations were also made for further study.
