본 연구는 상담자와 내담자의 언어반응이 상담성과에 주는 영향을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 실시된 단일사례 연구이다. 수용적인 분위기와 통찰을 중심으로 하는 총10회기의 상담이 진행되었다. 내담자는 4년제 대학에 재학중인 남성이며, 우울, 불안 및 낮은 자아존중감을 나타냈다. Hill Counselor Verbal Response Modes Category System (Hill, 1985)과 Hill Client Verbal Response Modes Category System(Hill et al., 1981)를 기준으로, 전체 회기 중에서 내담자의 회기평가가 가장 높은 회기와 가장 낮은 회기에서의 상담자와 내담자의 언어반응을 분석하였다. 회기평가가 높은 회기에서는 내담자의 체험과 통찰 그리고 상담자의 바꾸어 말 하기, 해석 및 직면 등의 언어반응이 많이 관찰되었다. 회기평가가 낮은 회기에서는 내담자의 기술과 상담자 의 한정질문이 많이 나타났다. 연계분석의 결과, 내담자의 체험과 통찰은 상담자의 바꾸어 말하기와 해석의 뒤에 일어날 확률이 높으며, 상담자의 한정질문의 뒤에는 그다지 나타나지 않는다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 상담자 가 회기를 효율적으로 진행하기 위한 방안으로서 회기 초반에는 바꾸어 말하기를, 회기의 중반 및 종반에서 는 해석 및 직면을 적절히 사용할 것이 제안되었다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of verbal response modes to the counseling outcome. Ten sessions of supportive insight-oriented counseling were conducted with a male undergraduate who was suffering from depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Hill Counselor Verbal Response Modes Category System (Hill, 1985) and Hill Client Verbal Response Modes Category System (Hill et al., 1981) were used to compare the verbal responses of the counselor and the client in the best two sessions with those of the worst two sessions. During the best sessions, the client showed more experiencings and insights and the counselor used more paraphrases, interpretations and confrontations. More descriptions and closed questions were observed during the worst sessions. The results of sequential analysis of the counselor-client verbal interaction indicated that client`s experiencing and insight were more likely to be associated with counselor`s antecedent paraphrase, interpretation, but less likely to follow counselor`s closed question. Suggestions were made about the use of counselor interventions within sessions.
