Holland의 진로 이론은 진로교육과 진로상담의 이론적 틀로써 광범위하게 이용되지만, 다양한 문화에서 Holland 이론의 적합성에 관해서는 의문이 제기되어 왔다. 이 연구에서는 우리나라에서 이루어진 Holland 이론에 대한 경험적인 연구들을 중심으로 리뷰하고, 이 결과를 중심으로 Holland 이론을 진로 상담에 적용할 때 주의할 점들이 기술되었다. 특히, 흥미의 순환순서모델과 정육각형 구조에 관한 가설, 일치성과 직업 행동과의 관계에 관한 가설들의 검증 결과가 중점적으로 다루어졌다. 연구들의 결과를 종합하면, 진로 상담에서 개인의 흥미를 고려하는 것은 적절하며 이는 선택한 전공이나 직업에 서의 만족과 관련되지만, 흥미 유형의 순환순서는 대상 집단별로 다르게 나타났으며, 정육각형 구조에 관해서는 충분한 증거가 발견되지 않았다. 현재 밝혀진 연구 결과를 토대로 본다면 일관성과 변별성 개념을 진로상담에 적용하는 것도 적절하지 않다고 결론지었다.

There has been a question regarding the applicability of Holland`s theory of career choice across different cultures, although it has been widely used as a theoretical framework guiding career counseling for people with diverse cultural backgrounds. This study reviews empirical studies investigating the validity of Holland`s theory in Korean culture and highlights the empirically validated hypotheses of Holland`s theory in Korea. Particulrarily, the validity of (a)the circular order model, (b) equidistant hexagonal structure of interests, (c)the relationship of congruence with job satisfaction is examined in this study. The results show that there is enough evidence to support the importance of exploring one`s interests and congruent work environment in career counseling. However, the evidence is limited supporting the circular order model, equidistant hexagonal structure of interests, and the significant relationships of consistency and differentiation with career behaviors.
