가능한 자기(Possible selves)는 미래 상태에서의 자기를 독특하게 나타내는 것으로 자신의 삶의 영역 에서 무엇이 될 것인가에 대한 기대, 희망, 두려움을 나타내며, 이는 개인의 성장과 발달에서 하나 의 틀과 가이드로서 기능한다. 본 연구는 Markus와 Nurius(1986)가 제기한 ``가능한 자기(Possible Selves)``개념에 근거하여 우리나라 대학생들의 가능한 자기를 설명하는 내용을 살펴보는데 연구 목적 이 있다. 이를 위해 경기지역I 대학과 서울의 S대 학생 298명에게 Oyserman와 Markus(1990)가 사용한 가능한 자기정보를 끌어내는 개방형반응지를 주고 각자의 생각을 자유롭게 기술하도록 하여, 이 서술자료에 귀납적 분석방법과 합의적 질적 연구법을 적용하여 기대하는 자기에 6개의 범주와 15개의 하위범주를, 두려워하는 자기에 5개 범주와 15개 하위범주를 도출하였다. 도출된 범주와 하위범주는 각각 (1) 직업/교육 (2) 대인간 영역 (3) 개인내 영역 (4) 과외활동 (5) 물질적 성취 (6) 건강과 (1)대인 간 영역 (2)개인내적 영역 (3)직업/교육 (4)건강 (5) 물질적 성취였다. 가능한 자기에 있어서 직업적 성취와 학업적 성취가 중요하게 기대되며 가까운 관계에서의 상실과 고립이 두려운 자기에서 중요 한 부분으로 나타났다.

The purpose of this study is to explore contents of university students` possible selves in Korea based on the concept of ``Possible Selves`` suggested by Markus and Nurius(1986). To achieve this purpose, 192 students attending a national university located in Kyungi povince were asked to fill out an open-ended questionnaire used by Oyserman & Markus (1990) to elicit information about their possible selves. Inductive method and consensual qualitative analytic method were applied on these narrative data. 6 categories and 15 subcategories (expected selves) and 5 categories and 14 subcategories (feared selves) were obtained. The former are (1) career/education (2) interpersonal (3) intrapersonal (4) extracurricular (5) attainment of material goods (6) health-related. The later are (1) interpersonal (2) intrapersonal (3) career/education (4) health-related (5) attainment of material goods. Although contents of possible selves among the students were found to be complex and varied, manifesting individual differences, the strong emphasis on professional and academic accomplishments and maintenance of relationships and intimacy.
