본 연구에서는 병사들의 군 생활 적응을 돕기 위하여 현역 복무중인 병사 419명을 대상으로 자기 개념의 한 측면으로 이해되고 있는 개별성과 관계성 중 어떤 개념이 군 생활 적응에 더욱 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 지에 대해 알아보았다. 먼저 개별성-관계성과 군 생활 적응 변인 간 상관분석을 한 결과, 개별성과 군 생활 적응은 두 변인 사이에 유의미한 상관이 나타나지 않았다. 반면에 관계성은 군 생활 적응과 유의미한 상관을 보였다. 또한 개별성과 관계성 상호간 유의미한 상관이 나타나지 않았다. 개별성과 관계성간에 유의미한 상관이 나타나지 않은 결과를 바탕으로 하여, 개별성과 관계성이 한 개인 안에 독립적으로 공존하는 변인이 라는 전제 하에, 병사 개개인마다 개별성과 관계성의 높고 낮음에 따라 4개의 집단을 구성하여 각 집단 간 군 생활 적응 수준을 비교하였다. 그 결과, 개별성과 관계성이 모두 높은 집단이 군 생활 적응 수준이 가장 좋았으며, 반대로 두 가지 특성이 모두 낮은 집단이 군 생활 적응 수준이 가장 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 개별성은 낮지만 관계성만 높은 집단은 두 변인 모두 높은 집단과 적응에 있어 유의미한 차이가 없었지만, 두 변인 모두 낮은 집단에 비해 유의미하게 군 생활 적응을 잘 하는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 개별성- 관계성과 군 생활 적응 수준 간, 전투병과 행정병으로 나눈 보직 특성이 조절변인으로 작용하는지 알아보았다. 그 결과 각 보직 구성원들의 개별성-관계성 수준이 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 그러므로 보직 특성 과 그 구성원들의 성향과는 상관이 없는 것을 알 수 있다. 본 연구를 통해, 개별성과 관계성의 균형 잡힌 발달이 군 생활 적응에 가장 유리한 개인적 조건임을 알 수 있었다. 특히 우리나라의 문화적 맥락에서 병사 들이 군대 생활에 쉽게 적응을 하기 위해서는 개별성보다는 관계성의 발달이 더욱 기능적임을 알 수 있다.

The purpose of present study was to investigate the relation between individuality-relatedness and military life adjustment in Korean soldiers. The study was performed with prepared questionnaire. In this study, 416 enlisted men participated. The main results of this study were summarized as follows: First, there were no significant correlation of two variables in the result of correlation analysis between individuality and adjustment of military life. Whereas the correlation with relatedness and adjustment of military life was positive one(r =.244, p ＜ .001). Finally, participants were assigned to one among four groups on the base of mean values ``Individuality-Relatedness Scale``. And then among groups difference in level of adjustment of military life were examined. According to the results of one way variance analysis, the group which individuality and relatedness are above the mean values showed best adjustment of military life. On the contrary, the group which individuality and relatedness are beneath the mean values showed poorest adjustment of military life. Also the group which relatedness are above the mean values only was not different from the group which individuality and relatedness are above the mean values. However, the group showed better adjustment of military life than the group which two variances are beneath the mean values. The implication of this study is that the balanced development of individuality and relatedness are the best foundation of adjustment of korean military life. Especially, relatedness is important factor for adjustment of korean military life.
