본 연구는 문헌을 통하여 쉬바파 탄트라 학파 중 하나인 카쉬미르 쉐비즘의 수행체계인 우파야를 중심으로 의식발달에 대하여 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 카쉬미르 쉐비즘에서는 의식의 본질에 관하여, 무엇보다 샥티를 수용하여 지식과 역동성을 하나의 의식의 본성으로 보았다. 의식은 지식뿐만 아니 라 에너지(샥티)이라는 관점은 의식발달의 점진적인 위계의 다양성을 시사하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 세 가지 유형의 영적불순(mala)을 살펴봄으로써, 그 결과 의식발달의 의미는 의식을 가리고 있는 영적불순 즉 말라(mala)의 정화를 의미함을 알 수 있었다. 세 가지 말라는 무한한 의식이 어떻게 수축되어 한정되는지를 설명하고 있으며, 이러한 의식의 수축을 다시 확장시키는 방법으로써 세 가지 유형의 우파야를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 세 가지 우파야는 세가지 말라와 서로 관련이 있으며, 각각의 말라를 정화하기 위하여 그에 상응하는 의식발달의 방법이 필요함을 알 수 있었다. 이를테면 가 장 거친 형태의 불순인 카르마 말라를 정화하기 위해서는 몸의 요가라고 하는 아나보파야가 필요하며, 미세한 불순인 마이야 말라를 정화하기 위하여 마음의 요가라고 하는 샥토파야가 필요하며, 가 장 미세한 불순인 아나바 말라를 정화하기 위하여 영성의 요가라고 하는 삼바보파야가 필요함을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 수련법과 의식발달은 서로 밀접한 연관이 있으며, 다양한 수련법이 있지 만 자신의 의식발달에 따라 수련법이 달라져야 함을 의미한다고 볼 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to describe the development of consciousness according to upaya in the kashmir saivism which is one of the schools of saiva tantra. In this study the nature of consciousness according to kashmir saivism has been discussed as pure knowledge(jnana) and activity (sakti). This concept of consciousness seems to describe the gradual development of consciousness. It is interesting to note that the development of consciousness of kashmir saivism means the removal of impurities(malas). Three malas imply how unlimited pure consciousness is contracted. Three upayas(meas of Self realization) have been discussed as the method of expanding the limited consciousness. Three impurities(malas) are related to three upayas each other. For example, karma mala, which is gross impurity, is counteracted by anavopaya which is the means(sadhana) of the body. Mayiya mala, subtle impurity is countered by shaktopaya, which is the means of the mind. Anava mala, more subtle impurity is countered by shambhavopaya which is the means of the soul or spirit. The following findings are significant and noteworthy: 1) the meaning of development of consciousness as the removal of impurities; 2) the relationship between upaya(means) and the development of consciousness; 3) the need to apply the different methods according to the degree of development of consciousness.
