본 연구에서는 ``군복무 부적응자란 군입대자 개인의 심리사회적 요인과 군대 조직의 물리적, 사회문화적 요인 간의 부조화로 인하여 개인의 안녕 및 군대와 일반 사회의 안녕에 심각한 문제를 일으킬 수 있는 행동을 현재 나타내고 있거나 잠재적으로 지니고 있는 자로 정의하면서, 군복무 부적응을 만드는 개인적 요인들과 더불어 환경적 요인들을 탐색하고, 이 둘 간의 상호작용을 보여주는 모델 을 검증하고자 하였다. 현역 병사 940명과 현역 간부 141명을 대상으로 간이정신진단검사, 군복무 부적응 실태조사를 실시한 결과 전체 병사의 10.96%, 간부의 28.3%가 각각 간이정신진단검사의 한 개 이상의 척도에서 부적응 증상을 보이고 있었다. 또한 병사의 입대 전부적응정도는 복무 부적응 에 직접적인 영향을 주며, 인권침해를 경험하는 정도에도 영향을 미침으로써 복무부적응을 일으키기도 하는 것으로 나타났다.

This study examined the personal and environmental factors contributing to the mental health and adjustment among Korean military servicemen. Nine hundred and forty enlisted men and 141 higher ranking officers completed Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and a survey asking their psychosocial experiences as well as their direct and indirect witness of human rights violations incidents within the military. Results showed that 10.96% of the enlisted men and 28.3% of the officers were experiencing more than one symptoms from the SCL-90. Results also showed that pre-enlistment adjustment level of the enlisted men was both directly and indirectly related to the current adjustment level during military service.
