<남궁선생전>의 주인공 남궁두는 비록 우발적일망정 도가의 독화론적 ``고독``에 진 입하여 신선이 되려했다. 이는 현실계와 초월계의 정신적 합일을 통한 화해로 연결 되곤 하는데 이를 존재론적 고독이라 할 수 있다. 하지만 남궁두는 애초 정신적 초월을 목적으로 한 인물이 아닌 탈주범이었으며 당연히 영적 초월을 육체적 초월로 이해 하게 된다. 그리고 육체적 초월마저 실패하자 남궁두에게 남은 삶은 무의미한 일상의 반복으로서 ``외로움``의 형식을 띠게 되는데 이 지점은 근대적 폭민이 성립되는 지점과 흡사하다. 그런데 남궁두는 暴民이 되는 대신 시정에 숨은 은둔자로 멈추고 만다. 그 이유를 추측하다보면 남궁두가 저자 허균이 상정했던豪民이른바 으로서, 평범한 폭 민 이상의 가능성을 지닌 인물이었음이 밝혀진다. 말하자면 폭동을 이끄는 민중 지도 자 상에서 실천력이라는 마지막 고리 하나를 결여한 잠재적 영웅이었다는 뜻이다. 당연히 이 작품이 초래할 결과에 대해 정치적 고려를 하지 않을 수 없었던 허균으로선 남궁두의 그러한 가능성을 소설을 통해 모두 실현시킬 수는 없었을 터이다. 그렇다면 <남궁선생전>이야말로 홍길동이라는 민중 지도자의 현실적 탄생 과정을 해명해줄 수 있는 <홍길동전>의 다른 짝패임을 추단할 수 있게 된다. 그리고 홍길동의 탄생은 ``근 대적 외로움``의 주체로서 근대적 주체를 예고하는 현상이었음도 더욱 분명해진다.

Naturally Heo Gyun who couldn`t but considering the results which this work might to incur on the political society shouldn t realize the possibilities. If these were true, the biography on Namgungseunsaeng must be the pair of the biography on Honggildong by which we can elucidate the real process of the public leader s birth. And it must be clearer than before that the birth of the biography on Honggildong was the phenomena notify beforehand the appearance of modern subject as the subject of modern loneliness.
