In this paper, I studied the aspect and the meaning of loneliness in Song Hae-ung s Literary Works. He was solid with the King Chongjo when he worked for Kyujanggak(National Archives of Choson dynasty). But he left office just after the death of King Chongjo. And he suffered from both severe poverty, insomnia, and eye disease. His deep loneliness is the result from the economic distress and the physical pain. Besides, many of his acquaintances died at this moment. Though he was fastidious and sensitive, he sought for the true social intercourse. Therefore the death of close friends made him mournful and painful. And those feelings led him to write literary works which contains lonely emotions. Meanwhile his loneliness also show up in his poetry. He used poverty, insomnia, disease, and decrepitude as materials for writing poem. And this tendency was found in his retirement period. He also impressed the frailty of human life, and aimed at transcendence with writing poetry. These were a way of overcoming hardships of real life. While he could not remove pains of his life with this attempt, we could put much meaning to his literary efforts. Because the creation of literature was the most important motive in his life to oppose loneliness.
