김구용은 병약한 체질 때문에 자신의 운명이 남들과는 다르다고 느꼈고, 이는 자기진술 욕망으로 이어졌다. 1940년 그는 산사에 머물면서 본격적인 문학수련을 시작했다. 그는 일기를 통해 습작 과정을 규율?통제하려고 했다. 그러나 이 시기 습작들보다 일기 쓰기 자체가 오히려 그의 문학 세계를 형성하는데 기여했다. 가령 그의 일기는 추억 속 이미지의 편린이 어떻게 다른 사물들과 결합하여 변형되는지 그 기제를 보여주었다. 또한 그의 일기는 그의 시의주제의식인 ‘자신불’, ‘불이’와 같은 불가적 깨달음에 관한 그의 생각을 비교적 선명하게 보여주었다. 해방기에 이르러 그의 일기는 일층 문학적인 것으로 변모했다. <구곡>등 그의 장시에 등장하는 다면적 화제를 하나의 흐름으로 묶는 진술방식을 이 시기 일기가 선취하고 있었다. 전시기의 일기는 전시 수도 부산의 문단이 ‘다방’을 중심으로 돌아가는 문화사적 양상과 피폐한 민중 현실의 참상을 핍진하게 묘사함으로써 그 자체로 문학성을 띤 것으로 평가할 수 있다. 그는 모든 정신적 가치를 압도하는 생계의 압박 속에서 다방과 거리를 넘나들면서 방황했고, 이 헤맴을 ‘자기[眞我] 찾기’, 참된 문학으로 향하는 모색의 도정으로 삼음으로써 자기 문학의 긴장감을 유지하려고 했다. 전시기 일기는 당시 기층민들의 삶의 애환, 문단의 풍속도를 담아냄으로써 1950년대 그의 시의 원풍경을 담아내고 있다는 점에서도 의미가 있다.

Gim Gu-yong felt that he was not as other men were, because he often stayed at the buddhist temple to recuperate for his own health in his childhood. He was in delicate health, so he felt an inner drive to want to write his autobiography. The desire for the self-document brought him into the dream of becoming a poet. At first he used his diary to discipline himself. He often checked practice pieces in his diary. But writing the diary was ultimately more important than writing practice pieces for the formation process of his literature. We can find his important symbol of kwan-yin[觀音], the subject of buddhism, and the narrative way of his poems in his diary. His diary was becoming more stylish. He wanted to express self-feeling, not to record everyday`s facts. In his diary written at the Korean war period many famous writers made an appearance. And his diary gave a clear depiction of the customs of the wartime capital Busan. He was getting sick and tired of writing for a living, and he felt doubts about the customs of the literary circle in the teahouse. He wandered the streets get out of the teahouse, and he made his metaphor of this ``wander`` to protect his literature from the frustration of the spiritual value. He wandered to find his real self, to seek the true poetry. In the process he discribed the people`s grief of the living beyond good and evil in his diary. That sight acted as a harmonic tone in his poems.
