In this paper, I analyze director Jon Johns`s 2007 film adaptation of Jane Austen`s Northanger Abbey. Contrary to Giles Foster`s 1987 film and Austen`s original novel, this version of film has made a great appeal to a large audience. Its success results from including some very interesting and romantic nuances which are rarely observable in the previous versions of film. The big success of Jon John`s Northanger Abbey may imply that it was a worthy effort to do a reinterpretation from its previous bildungsroman versions of novel to a melodrama, and the reinterpretation could provide a great opportunity for the public to consider reading the original text of the novel. As a result, many people will remember Northanger Abbey by Austen to be a lovely melodrama. (Daejin University)
