John Clare is a poet of birds. He described in tremendous detail various local birds in his descriptive poems, extending knowledge of each species, its mannerisms, its habitant, its nest. Generally, a bird`s nest in his poems stands for an image of his home. Therefore, it is a secure and peaceful place. However, when Clare as a speaker and his readers hunt for the nests, the nests are other metaphors of vulnerable and dangerous places to human beings because the nests are so small and fragile. In Clare`s poetry, it is clear that natural things including birds, fear human beings. The existence of that fear is implied in the actions of the birds, as well as in the caution of the speaker. Clare understands well the relationship of nature`s innocence and human being`s cruelty. He perceives the natural world is to be different from the human world, acknowledging the otherness of nature. This difference often prevents human being from perceiving nature correctly. Clare`s real perception and respect for the natural world are nowadays admired by eco-critics.
