인간다운 만남, 인간다운 사회적 관계는 품격 있는 사람들이 만들어내는 품위 있는 사회다. 이런 품위 있는 사회는 민주사회의 다른 이름이라 할수 있을 것이다. 그리고 이런 사회를 지속적으로 유지하는 데 필요한 능력과 덕목과 합리성의 수준을 체득한 사람을 길러내는 것이 ‘교양교육’이다. 이러한 교양교육의 중심축에 <시민교육>이 있다. ‘시민’으로서의 ‘나’는 가족, 이웃, 지역, 국가, 세계라는 모둠판에서 살아가고 있다. 그래서 <시민교육>은 다음과 같은 ‘시민’ 양성이라는 교육목표를 설정할 수 있다. 첫째 민주사회를 발전시킬 역량을 가진 합리적 비판적 민주시민, 둘째 공동체적 삶을 유지하는 데 필요한 신뢰, 선의, 공감, 배려, 봉사, 유대의 덕목을 가진따뜻한 이웃, 셋째 한 나라의 시민임과 동시에 지구사회를 생각하는 ‘세계시민’이 그것이다. 교양교육과 시민교육의 철학적 토대는 ‘훌륭함(arete, 아레테)’을 실현하는 삶이다. 바꿔 말하자면 ‘훌륭한 삶’을 살아가기 위해 교양교육과 시민교육이 필요하다. 특히 훌륭함을 알고, 그 앎(episteme, 에피스테메)을 실천과 합일시킬 수 있는 지적·윤리적·사회적 능력을 기르는 것이 대학의 시민교육이다.

So civil education` has educational aims, cultivating citizens as follows;, First, a rational, critical and democratic citizen who has capacity to develop the democratic society, Second, a neighbor with the virtues such as faith, good will, sympathy, consideration, service, sensibility of relationship, Third, a cosmopolitan citizen who concerns about this global village as a people of a nation, so it is. The foundation of the liberal and civil education is life with realizing arete. This means that, in order to achieve life with aret?, we need the liberal and civil education. Civil education of universities brings up intellectual, ethical and social capacity, for matching this epist?m? about aret? with actual action.
