이 글은 夢觀 李廷柱(1778~1853)의 시세계를 학계에 처음으로 소개하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이정주는 譯官의 名家인 牛峯 李氏 가문에서 태어나서 그 자신도 譯科에 합격하여 역관의 길을 걷다가, 40대 후반 이후의 어느 시점에 갑자기 세상과 담을 쌓고 讀書와 作詩로 여생을 보낸 특이한 인물이다. 19세기의 대표적 閭巷 문인인 玉山 張之琬은 이정주를 希庵 玄錡(1809~1860), 夏園 鄭芝潤(1808~1858), 樵山 柳最鎭(1791~1869)과 함께 중인 출신의 불우한 문제적 시인으로 언급한 바 있다. 그러나 한문학사는 물론 閭巷文學을 전문적으로 다룬 논저에서도 아직까지 본격적으로 이정주에 대해 언급한 바가 없는 것으로 보인다. 이정주는 중국 역대의 시 중에서도 특히 晩唐과 晩明의 작품을 좋아했던 바, 그의 詩風에도 이 점이 반영되었다고 평가받고 있다. 淸의 문인인 吳嵩梁은 “幽妙淸警”하다고 극찬했고, 金弘集 역시 “淸警有雅韻”하다고 高評했다. 이 글에서는 이러한 평가에 착안하여 우선 淸警하고 雅潔한 특징이 두드러진 그의 작품들을 집중적으로 분석하였다. 그리고 삶에 대한 의식이 보다 직접적으로 드러난, 卽興詩에 가까운 ‘偶題’類의 작품들을 고찰하여 그의 憂憤을 살펴보려고 하였다. 이정주는 19세기 중반기의 시단에 큰 발자취를 남겼던 藕船 李尙迪(1804~1865)의 從叔으로서, 이상적의 생부인 天賴 李廷稷(1781~1816)과 함께 이상적의 시세계에 중요한 영향을 끼친 것으로 평가받고 있다. 이 논문은 이정주라는 한 작가를 발굴해서 소개하는 것에 그치지 않고, 이상적의 시세계, 더 나아가 19세기 여항문학과 한시사 연구를 위한 작은 디딤돌의 하나가 되기를 희망해 본다.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce first the poetry of Lee Jeong-ju(李廷柱, 1778~1853) to the scholastic world of Korean literature. As he was borne by the family of interpreter, he started his career as an offical interpreter for chinese. But when he arrived at hs late forties, he resigned his agelong interpreter job. And he devoted himself to reading and writing poetries. Among his fellow interpreter-poets, he was referred to unfortunate problem poets with Hyun Ki(玄錡, 1809-1860), Chung Ji-Youn(鄭芝潤, 1808~1858), and Yu Choe-Jin(劉最鎭, 1791~1869). His poetry was evaluated as having excellent, clear atmosphere and fresh unique expression by Chosun and Qing Dynasty literary critics. Conforming to this evaluation, we focused to select and analyse his works in The Poems of Mongkwan(夢觀詩稿). One of His first cousin was Lee Jeong-jik(李廷稷, 1781~1816) whose son was Lee Sang-jeok(李尙迪, 1804~1865), one of the excellent poets of the middle 19th century in Chosun Dynasty. And they thought to be contributed significant influences to him. This paper is, we hope, not only the maiden introduction of the poetical works of Lee Jeong-ju, but also playing the role of the little stepping stone of the 19th century Sino-Korean poetry in Chosun Dynasty.
