박세당의 간독은 편지이기 때문에 공적으로 말할 수 없는 희로애락이 그대로 드러나서 그의 또 다른 모습을 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 자료가 되고 있다. 박세당의 삶에 있어서 즐거움은 시서화(詩書畵)를 감상하는 일과 자연속의 삶 그 자체에서 찾을 수 있는 것이다. 그의 간독에는 서화를 감상하고 즐기는 일이 큰 비중을 차지하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 그는 독서와 토론을 좋아하고 그것이 진리를 찾는 옳은 방법이라고 생각해서 늘 서신에서도 유교적 주제를 가지고 논의하지만 이러한 비판적 접근에 익숙하지 않은 지인들은 박세당의 탈주자학적 경전해석에 대해 동의하지 않았다. 당시 국정에 참여하고 있었던 처남 남구만과의 서신교환을 통해 박세당은 눈치를 보는 지도자가 되지 말고 옳고 그른 것은 분명히 하여 옳은 정책을 소신껏 추진하는 것이 바른 길임을 늘 말하고 있다. 아들 박태보의 죽음은 박세당의 인생에서 가장 참혹한 고통중의 하나였다. 숙종의 심문에 굴하지 않고 충언을 하다 고문에 의해 세상을 떠난 비통한 심정을 이야기한 것이 바로 이에 관련된 간독들이다. 그리고 그 슬픔을 나눈 사람은 주로 윤증과 남구만이었다. 그럼에도 그는 냉정한 이성을 가진 인물이었다. 시대의 흐름에 무비판적으로 맹종하는 자가 아니라 항상 예리한 지성으로 세상을 보았다. 풍수지리설이 허망하다는 견해는 제자들과의 편지에 지성의 일단이 잘 드러나고 있다.

He suffered from the case. He shared his unfortunate emotion with Yoon Zung and Nam Kooman. When we read this letters, then we do sympathy them together. But he was a very cool head person. He did not agree with main steam in his age. He used to critics dogmatic ideology and unreasonable thinking at his time. We can read his sharp sight through his letters.
