Pictures and words are woven together in picturebooks to create a single text. The interactions between words and pictures serve as ligaments that provide coherence between the three stories while contributing great variety to the picturebook realm. Picturebooks are cultural artifacts containing the lifestyle and philosophy of the era. Notably, the cultural elements are embedded in the immaterial interactions between the text and images. Postmodern picturebooks can be seen as natural outcomes of history unfolding. Those picturebooks show postmodern characteristics such as boundary-breaking, open endings, indeterminancy, and performance. Such special features are expressed through intertextuality, metafiction, play with peritext, and so on. Using those characteristics, The Jolly Postman or Other People`s Letters shows that the traditional limitations and norms of the picturebook have been subverted. (Hannam University)
