This paper attempts to analyze Eliot`s thoughts on Marvell and his writing methods. Eliot asserts that it is difficult to precisely evaluate Marvell. One of the reasons is that Marvell`s life and his talents have a variety of characteristics. Eliot evaluates that Marvell`s techniques in his works are superior to any other writers, in spite of having only a few works. Eliot asserts that wit and magniloquence alter with age, measuring that Lafontaine and Gautier have an excellent wit but Shelley, Keats, Wordsworth etc. don`t. Marvell`s wit is especially preeminent in To His Coy Mistress. Eliot compares Marvell with other poets-Milton, Jonson, Morris etc-, and estimates that Marvell uses the wit very properly, giving us a surprising effect. In conclusion, Eliot protests that true wit is the alliance of levity and seriousness, and that Marvell did this very well. (Dongyang University)
