본고에서는 전근대 시기 한국의 여성과 관련하여 풍부하고 의미있는 언급을 담고 있는 흠영 (欽英)의 한 면모를 그 저자인 유만주(兪晩柱)의 여성인식과 연관지어 해명하고자 했다. 유만주가 지닌 여성 개인에 대한 인식을 가장 뚜렷이 보여주는 지점이 바로 이름에 대한 그 특유의 태도라 간주하는바, 이 점을 단서로 삼아 논의를 진행했다. 유만주는 22세 때 반계수록 (磻溪隧錄)을 읽으며 호적(戶籍)에 여성의 이름을 등재해야 할 뿐만 아니라 공사(公私) 영역에서 여성의 이름을 감출 필요가 없다는 생각을 명확히 하게 된 이래, 자신의 경험세계 안에서 알게 된 여성들의 이름을 기억하고 그 명명법(命名法)이 지닌 경향성까지 파악해 가면서 조선 여성의 이름과 관련한 당대의 통념에 대해 비판적으로 인식하고 자기 나름의 견해를 형성해 왔다. 그 결과 그는 여성의 이름이 한자의 음과 뜻을 고려하여 아화(雅化)되고 있었던 당대의 정황을 정확히 포착해낼 수 있었다. 또한 그는 여성인식에서 당대의 통념과는 상당히 거리를 두었을 뿐만 아니라, 어떤 여성에 대한 사적(史蹟)을 적으며 여성의 실명(實名)을 밝히는 것이 오히려 그 여성을 존중하는 기술방식이라고 하는 특유한 견해에 도달하게 되었다. 이처럼 유만주가 동시대 여성의 이름에 주목하여 특별한 성과를 보이게 된 것은, 그 자신의 주변적 처지로부터 출발하여 세계의 주변적 존재에 대해 정당한 조명을 가하려는 시도의 일환이었고, 이는 결국 저마다의 존재가 지닌 개별적 고유성을 발견하여 자신의 존재의의까지도 증명 하고자 하는 스스로의 절박한 요청에서 기인한 것으로 여겨진다.

This study suggests elucidation about one aspect of Heumyeong 欽英, which tells plentiful and significant reference to premodern Korean females, associated with Yu Manju兪晩柱`s recognition of females who writes Heumyeong. Since the point that shows most distinctly Yu Man-ju`s recognition of individual females is regarded as his unique attitude on names, the argument will start making this point as a clue. Yu Manju, when he was 22 years old, clarified his thought that there was no need to hide names of females in public and private matters as well as that names of females must be recorded in their family register, reading Bangyesurok磻溪隧錄. Since then, while remembering names of females who he had known in his experience and apprehending tendency of the nomenclature, he had a critical perception on contemporary common idea related to names of Joseon 朝鮮females so as to develop his own opinion. As a result, he could grasp accurately the contemporary situation that names of females had become more elegant, that is, to use Chinese characters and sound sweet. Also, while writing the historical records of certain females, he reached a view, in opposition to the contemporary common idea, that disclosure for real names of females was a preferable description way to respect the females. In this way, Yu Manju`s exhibition of special fruits with his attention to names of contemporary females was an attempt to start from his peripheral circumstances and illuminate justly peripheral beings of the universe and thus, it was deemed to come from his own desperate request to discover an individual characteristic that each being has.
