본고에서는 자신의 생애를 서사화하는 방식이 곧 자신의 삶을 인식하는 방식과 밀접한 관계를 갖는다고 보고, 이들 간의 상관성을 고찰하고자 했다. 특히 생애담의 종결 방식을 생애담 구연자가 죽음을 의미화하는 방식과 관련 지어 이해해 보려고 했다. 이를 위해 『시집살이 이야기 집성』에 실린 생애담 세 편을 연구 대상으로 삼아 분석을 진행했다. 2장에서 검토한 생애담은 삶의 의미를 타인들과의 관계 속에서 발견하는 화자의 이야기였다. 이 생애담의 화자는 생의 의미를 어떠한 죽음을 맞는가에서 찾기 때문에, 이야기의 결말이 이전 사건들의 의미를 재규정한다는 점에서 소급형의 서사 구조를 갖는다고 보았다. 이 유형의 생애담에서 죽음은 삶의 이야기 전체에 허구적인 구조를 부여하는 종결의 기능을 하는 의미의 원천이다. 3장에서 살펴본 생애담의 화자는 삶을 그 의미를 찾아가는 여정으로 이해한다. 화자는 자신의 삶을 고난의 의미를 탐색하고 발견하는 과정으로 서사화하기에, 이 생애담은 탐색형의 서사 구조를 갖는다고 보았다. 이 유형의 생애담에서 죽음은 삶이라는 시련을 모두 겪고 난 뒤에 획득한 자격, 다시 말해서 자신에게 주어진 임무를 성공적으로 수행한 후, 삶이라는 무대에서 영광스럽게 맞는 은퇴와 같은 것이다. 4장에서 검토한 생애담은 어떠한 상황 속에 내던져진 개인의 이야기이다. 이 생애담의 화자는 우연한 생존의 에피소드들을 병렬식으로 나열하고, 삶과 죽음을 언제 어떻게 벌어질지 모르는 사건으로 이해한다. 이 생애담에서 죽음은 삶이 그러했듯 자신의 행위 또는 앞서 벌어진 사건들과 어떠한 유기적 관계도 맺지 않는, 불가항력적인 사건으로 존재한다.

This paper has been focused on identifying the feature of Women`s life stories. In order to identify the way of narrating the self, the paper has been focused on the close relationship between a way of narrating one`s lives and a way of recognizing one`s lives within the Women`s life stories. On chapter 2 the paper intended to find out the narrational features of Kim Pilyou`s life story. She thought that the most important thing of our life is how to die. So she was envious of her two mothers-in-law because they died as if they were slept. She was signifying one`s life retroactively at the moment of dying. As a result, the paper find out that these life story regarded the death as the source of meaning. On chapter 3 the paper intended to find out the features of Han Misoo`s life story. She thought that the most important thing of her life is to know the meaning of her life. She was signifying her life like a quest story. As a result, the paper find out that these life story regarded the death as a license or an evidence. After realizing the meaning of life, she didn`t care about her remaining years.
