본 연구는 텔레비전 토론에서 후보자들이 구사하는 언어 메시지를 대상으로 후보자들의 논증전략을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 대선토론에 등장한 후보자들이 주어진 선거 쟁점에서 어떠한 측면에 초점을 맞추어 주장을 제기하고 있는지를 분석하고, 이같은 주장을 통해 드러나는 논증구조를 분석함으로써 그 특성을 밝히고자 한다. 아울러 후보자들이 서로 상대방 후보에게 던진 질문의 유형을 검토함으로써 토론에 임했던 각 후보자의 논증전략을 전체적으로 조감함과 동시에 15대와 16대 대선 토론의 논증유형을 비교, 분석하는 것을 연구의 목적으로 삼는다. 분석 결과 15대 후보자들은 당시 우리나라 IMF 구제금융위기 상황과 맞물려 경제위기상황을 초래한 잘못된 정치의 심각성에 초점을 맞춘 쟁점유형이 많이 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있다. 16대 대선에서는 지속성과 심각성의 필수쟁점 유형이 거의 절반에 이르는 비중을 보이고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 두 번째 연구문제에서 먼저 주장유형은 양 대 선거 모두 사실적 주장이 가장 높은 비중을 보였다. 근거유형에 있어서는 양 대선 토론 모두 사실?사건에 근거하여 주장을 제기하는 경우가 가장 많았다. 세 번째 연구문제인 질문의 경우 토론의 형식과 절차가 엄격하게 준수되는 대통령 후보자 정책토론이기 때문에 질문의 빈도도 적고 주로 주어진 논제에 대한 상대 후보의 의견을 묻는 개방적 질문이 많이 이루어진 것으로 나타났다. 그렇지만1:1토론이 도입된16대 대선에서는 상대 후보에 대한 자격박탈식 질문의 빈도가 현저하게 높아지는 점을 알 수 있었다.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the argumentation strategies of presidential candidates in TV Debate for the 15th and 16th Presidency. The study examines the stock issues, the use of argumentation and cross examination of the debate participants. As a result, the 15th Presidential TV Debate panel mentioned relative high frequency in the significance of the stock issues in Korean politics. However, the panels of the 16th Presidential TV Debate argued the inherence and significance of the political issues in equal frequency. In the use of Argumentation, the panels of the both Presidential TV Debate claimed substantially in the main and used generally facts and happens as supports for that claims. In the cross-examination between the candidates asked the panel for the 15th Presidential TV Debate mainly open questions to the other challengers. On the other hand, the candidates for the 16th Presidential TV Debate attacked the others personal (ad hominem).
