재활공학연구소(KOREC)은 국내 장애인의 복지 수준을 향상시키고 관련 산업을 육성할 목적으로 설립된 재활의료공학 중심의 정부출연기관이다. 최근 KOREC에서는 엔지니어링 디자인(ED)과 인더스트리얼디자인(ID)을 하나의 통합디자인으로 활용하고자 하는 움직임이 일고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 KOREC의 재활의료용 시제품 개념개발에 적합한 통합디자인으로서 운용 가능할, 병행적-대화방식의 통합디자인 프로세스의 모형을 개발할 목적으로 진행되었다. 연구의 핵심 내용은 두(2) 디자인분야에서 수용이 가능한 두(2) 디자인프로세스의 주안점과 그 특성들을 비교 고찰하는 것과, 이를 하나(1)의 통합적 틀로서 운영 가능한 디자인프로세스의 모형을 개발하는 것이었다. 양 디자인의 이율배반적 특성은 디자인활동의 3차원들인 디자이너, 디자인과업, 디자인프로세스를 실증주의 및 구성주의 패러다임의 비교 인식을 통하여 규명하고자 하였으며, 통합적 모형으로서 가능성은 P5에서 제안한 핑퐁(Ping-Pong)모델을 근간으로 모색해 보았다. 결과적으로 제시된 KOREC 맞춤형 통합디자인 프로세스의 모형에서는 성능 우선의 합목적성을 지향하는 엔지니어링디자인(ED)과 창의성 우선의 신개념 창출을 지향하는 인더스트리얼디자인(ID)이 하나의 개념이나 행위로 구성되어 각각 5 단계들로 이루어진 병행적 구조를 이루게 되었고, 명사형인 개념으로서의 디자인과 동사형인 행위로서의 디자인들로 구성된 10 단계들은 마치 탁구공이 핑퐁하는 것처럼 상호작용할 수 있는 대화 방식의 구조를 이루게 되었다.

The role of KOREC(Korea Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Engineering Center) is to enhance the Korean orthopedics & rehabilitation technology and to promote the relevant domestic industry. The core activity of KOREC has been focused on developing the methodology related to orthopedics and rehabilitation engineering. However, including the development of industrial products and systems for the people with disabilities, the range of KOREC`s activity is much wider than ever. KOREC should work together the industrial design nowadays. The exclusive technology of KOREC is not familiar to the industrial design in fact. The meaning in Design is much important than the ways in Engineering Design(ED) and Industrial Design(ID). The difference between ED and ID must be interpreted by not longitudinally but laterally. That is just a reason why every design is one of integrated activities by human-beings. Both should tune each jargon to common sense and develop together the model of dual-way design process for one design (an integrated design). Finally, ’the Ping-Pong model of integrated design process’ is proposed for the integrated realization of KOREC`s prototyping.
