최근 신문의 기능이 필요한 정보만을 찾아보는 방식으로 바뀌면서 단순한 정보나열이 아닌 눈길을 끄는 시각요소의 중요성이 더욱 강조되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 국내 신문에서 사용된 다이어그램을 분류하고 사례조사를 통해 국내 신문 다이어그램의 현황과 디자인의 문제점을 파악하고자 한다. 현 국내 신문의 발행부수 별 통계를 토대로 2011년 1월 한 달간 발행된 5개 신문(조선일보, 중앙일보, 동아일보, 한겨레신문, 경향 신문)을 바탕으로 구성요소와 다이어그램 사용 빈도를 측정하였다. 그 결과, 통계 다이어그램이 총 449번의 빈도로 활용 도가 가장 높았으며 상관 다이어그램이 239번의 빈도로 뒤를 이었다. 기사에 따른 사용빈도는 정치, 경제, 사회기사에서 통계 다이어그램 유형이 많이 사용되었으며 국제기사는 상관 다이어 그램, 문화기사는 상관 다이어그램과 일러스트레이션 다이어그램의 빈도가 높게 나타났다. 현재 국내 신문 다이어그램 디자인은 활용도는 높은 편이나 신문 내에서 통일성이 부족하고 단순 통계 다이어그램에 치중된 사용빈도를 보이고 있었으며, 일부 다이어그램은 지나친 그래픽 의 남용으로 인해 복잡도가 높아져 오히려 수용자의 정보인지를 방해할 우려가 있었다. 향후 사례조사에서 얻어진 문제점을 바탕으로 다이어그램 제작에 있어 정보전달 기능과 동시에 시각 적 만족도를 이끌어 내는 다이어그램 디자인에 대해 모색하여야 할 것이다

As the function of news papers has turned to a method in which readers find only the information they need recently, the importance of visual elements that attract reader`s attention is being emphasized rather than simple arrangement of information. Thus this study aims to current status and design problems of diagram design in domestic newspaper campanies through clarification of diagrams used in domestic newspapers and analysis on cases. Using the statistical data of circulation of domestic newspapers, this study measured frequency of diagram use and its components from 5 newspaper companies pressed in January 2011. As a result, the highest frequency in use was statistical diagram with a frequency of 449, and followed by cause-effect diagram with a frequency of 239. The present diagram designs in domestic newspapers are of high degree of application however lack in uniformity and is somewhat weighed in simple statistical diagrams. Besides, some diagrams with excessive use of graphic technologies increase complexity thus disrupting readers recognize information. Based on the problems found in future case studies, there should be further attempts of new diagram designs that can draw reader`s visual satisfaction as well as delivery of information.
