20세기의 정보 기술 혁신은 다른 분야뿐만 아니라, 예술의 영역에도 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 컴퓨터의 보급과 인터넷의 발달로 테크놀로지의 접근이 쉬워짐에 따라 넷 아트를 선두로 소프트웨어 아트, 게임 아트, 미디어 퍼포먼스 등을 포함한 새로운 예술, 이른바 뉴미디어아트의 시대가 탄생하였다. 기존의 미술에선 볼 수 없었던 색다른 표현이 가능해짐에 따라 미디어아트가 지닌 흥미진진한 잠재성은 현 시대의 뜨거운 주목을 받고 있다. 그러나 한편 사람들(관객)과 미디어 아티스트들은 미디어아트 작품의 개념적인 의미에 집중하기 보다는 자본과 테크놀로지가 만들어내는 인공적인 미와 재미에 무비판적, 무의식적으로 길들여지고 있다. 예술은 아티스트 개인의 자율성을 표현하는 데에도 그 목적이 있지만, 현 시대의 고민을 담아내고 공론화 할 수 있는 소통의 매개체로서 그 역할을 다 해야 한다. 이런 점에서 미디어아트는 지나친 정보화와 기술 발전이 만들어낸 신종 사회적 이슈들을 어떠한 예술 장르보다 더욱 효과적으로 비판할 수 있다는 장점을 지니고 있다. 본 연구에서는 디지털 사회가 탄생시킨 미디어아트의 의미를 생각해보고, 관련된 미디어아트 작품의 사례를 분석해보며 현대 사회적 이슈를 담론화 할 수 있는 예술로서 미디어아트가 갖는 의의를 정의해보고자 한다.

The information technology innovation in the 20th Century not only had influence on in other fields but also in boundary of art. The spread of computer and development of the internet allowed convenient approach to technology and the period of new media art, known as new art including net art, software art, game art and media performance, was born. An exclusive expression different from preexisting became possible and the interesting media art with potentiality became the hot issue of the period. On the other hand, the people(audience) and media artists unconsciously and uncritically tend to focus on capital as well as artificial beauty and interest made by technology rather than conceptual meaning of the work itself. Art holds its purpose in expressing autonomy of an artist. However, it must also perform its role as a medium for communication and consensus of the issues in modern days. In this matter, media art holds merit to criticize the new social issues delivered by extreme informatization and technology development more efficient than any other art genres. The purpose of this study is to consider the meaning of media art created by the digital society as well as to define the meaning of media art as an art allowing discussion of social issues by analyzing some of the related media art works.
