본 논문은 인터넷상의 네트워크와 소통 자체를 예술 창작의 재료이자 창작의 원천으로 삼고 있는 넷 아트를 중심으로 현대 예술에서 나타나는 소통의 문제를 논하고 있다. 그를 위해 본 논문은 컴퓨터가 만드는 디지털 공간에서 비트라는‘이진수 DNA’가 번식과 선택, 변이라는 진화의 과정을 겪으면서‘디지털 생태계’를 형성하고 있다는 전제로부터 출발하고 있다. 넷아트는 인터넷상의 정보를 수집, 가공, 재조직하여 소통시키는‘정보의 예술’이다. 넷아트에서 중요한 것은 물질적인 구조가 아니라 연결능력이다. 넷아트는 정보의 소통을 그 대상으로 하기 때문에 소통의 과정을 시각화하는 것이 관건이다. 정보는 살아있는 유기체와 같은 것이며 디지털 세계에서는 자연세계와 마찬가지로 적자생존, 돌연변이, 번식과 같은 진화의 법칙을 따르고 있다는 것이다. 넷아트의 작품은 디지털 네트워크 환경 속에서 상호작용적 소통을 거치는 진화의 과정으로서 존재한다.

This paper discusses the issues of communication in modern art by focusing on Net art, which utilizes the internet-based network and communication as creative source. For this, this paper begins from the underlying assumption that the evolution through reproduction, selection, and variation of “bit DNA”constructs the digital ecosystem. Net art is an "information art" that gathers, shapes, and restructures information on the internet. The important thing in Net art is not its physical structure, but its connective capacity. Net art is targeted for the communication of information, the essence is to visualize the process of communication. Information is an organism that follows the rules of evolution such as the survival of the fittest, mutation, and reproduction. Therefore, the bit is ‘information’ that is immaterial, and can be reproduced as communication genes. Net art exists as a process of evolution in the mutual communicatory environment of digital network.
