본 연구는 유용한 도시 공간임에도 대부분 방치되어 있는 도시 고가도로 하부공간의 기능적, 미적, 환경적 조건을 검토하여 건축적 활용의 가능성을 모색하고자 한다. 국외의 고가도로 하부 공간 이용 사례를 검토하고 제한적이나마 시도된 국내의 일부 사례를 소개하였으며, 고가도로 하부를 건축 공간으로 사용함에 있어 제약이 되는 소음, 진동, 공기정화, 접근성, 도시경관 등 고려 요건의 현황과 그 해결을 위한 대응 방안을 고찰하였다. 이와 같은 분석을 바탕으로 고가도로 하부에서 수용 가능한 도시 기능 시설을 선정, 평가하여 그 건축적 활용 가능성을 제시하였다.

This research is focused on the possibility of architectural use of the space under urban overpasses which are in a state of neglect. I surveyed some foreign samples of urban space under overpass and few internal examples. The noise, vibration, air condition, accessibility and townscape are restrictions for architectural use of the space under overpass in the street. So I studied the conditions of these elements in the urban streets and suggested effective ways to solve problems of each element. As a result of this research, I proposed the types of adaptable urban architectural functions for the space under overpass by architectural evaluation process.
