20세기 기계미학의 시대가 창조와 감성의 시대로 변화하면서 21세기 기업과 국가 경쟁력의 핵심 요인으로 디자인의 역할이 강조되고 있으며 2006년 스위스 다보스에서 개최된 세계경제포럼(World Economic Forum) 연차총회에서도 디자인을 혁신 키워드로 선정하는 등 디자인은 신 성장 동력으로 주목 받고 있다. 더 나아가 최근에는 선진국을 중심으로 산업을 위한 디자인에서 사회적 책임과 삶의 질을 향상시키기 위한 지속가능한 디자인에 대한 인식으로 전환되면서 환경·에너지·주택·범죄예방 등 사회전반에 디자인을 접목하고 있다. 풍력산업에서도 신재생에너지 개발을 통해 지구환경을 보호하고 풍요로운 삶을 제공하기 위해 원천기술개발과 함께 디자인과의 융합에 대한 중요성을 인식하고 있다. 본 연구는 정부의 신재생에너지 지원사업인 도시형풍력발전원천기술센터(CUWES, Break-through Technology Center for Urban Wind Energy Systems)에서 진행한 디자인과 공학의 학제간 연구이다. 도시에 적합한 에너지시스템인 풍력·태양광 하이브리드 가로등의 컨셉 도출에서부터 기술이전을 통한 상용화까지의 전 과정을 소개함으로써 대학 내 융합연구의 가능성을 살펴보았다. 또한 지구보존과 지속가능한 삶을 위한 디자인의 역할과 중요성을 입증하고 신재생에너지를 활용한 가로등의 새로운 비즈니스 모델을 제시하고자 한다.

The 21st century is being described as being the Age of Creativity and Sensitivity. The key words for the Annual Meeting of World Economic Forum held in 2006, Davos, Switzerland were innovation, creativity and design yet design was the foremost thing that enhances business growth and national competitiveness. Therefore, the role of design is more emphasized in today`s world. Designers believe that design posses the capacity to solve social and environmental issues such as crime prevention, housing or energy for sustainable human life as well as business. Besides, new and renewable energy industry affects positively on human life through interdisciplinary study of design and engineering. This study introduces the design process of wind-solar hybrid street lighting for urban wind power systems and the influence of design in technology. Furthermore, it considers the role and opportunity for design in the sustainable world and proposes the new business model for wind energy industry.
