본 논문에서는 병자호란 이후 조선의 지식인들이 겪었던 정신적 외상을 문학을 통해 극복하고자 한 실례를 찾아보고자 하였다. 병자호란 이후 청나라에 대한 復讐雪恥가 시대적 담론으로 대두되었던 당시의 조선 상황 속에서, 조선의 지식인들은 유사한 시련을 극복해내고 최종적으로 복수에 성공한 역사 인물을 역할모범으로 삼아 본받고자 하는 일련의 움직임이 있었다. 이 시기에 春秋時代의 인물인 越王句踐이 여러 사람들에 의해 회자되었다. ‘臥薪嘗膽’의 고사로 잘 알려진 구천은, 멸망 직전의 상황을 딛고 일어나 약 20년에 걸친 긴 시간 동안 치욕을 견디며 국력을 키운 끝에 극적인 복수에 성공한 인물이었기 때문이다. 이러한 당대적 현상을 배경으로 하여, 본고에서는 당시의 지식인들이 구천을 기억하는 방식을 세부적으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이를 통해, 역사로부터 확인할 수 있는 구천의 행적은 동일하였지만, 해석자의 정치적 입장과 복수설치에의 의지 정도에 따라 각기 다른 면모를 부각시켜 해석했다는 사실을 확인하였다. 이러한 관점은 문학에도 반영되어, 해당 시기에는 구천의 복수를 높이 평가하는 작품들이 다수 창작되었다. 구천의 복수를 드높이는 일이 곧 청나라에 대한 복수 의지를 고양하는 일이었기 때문이다. 다른 한편으로는, 현실적인 한계로 인해 복수설치가 어렵다고 한다면, 복수에 성공했던 구천의 사적을 통해 정신적인 위안을 얻으려 했다고도 할 수 있다. 이러한 분석을 통해, 병자호란 이후 구천의 사적을 문학적으로 형상화하고자 했던 일련의 창작 활동이 병자호란으로부터 입은 정신적 외상을 극복하고자 한 일종의 치유 행위였음을 확인하고자 하였다.

This paper aims to analyze the interpretation of historical figure Gou Jian (句踐) after the Manchu War of 1636. Because ``a desire for revenge`` was an important discourse at that time, and people of Joseon wanted to set up a role model from the history. Gou Jian who was the King of Yue(越) during the spring and autumn period, experienced amount of pain due to the invasion of Wu(.). Though he almost lost his country, he realized a dream of prosperity and military power through 20 years of preparations. Then he succeed in revenging for Wu. This event acted as a powerful stimulus to Joseon society. Because Joseon wanted to revenge on Qing dynasty. Against this backdrop, I examined various ways of reminding Gou Jian at that time carefully. With this, I ascertained that people tried to interpreted him as following their own needs. It depended on their political position and the will for revenge. This tendency was reflected in the field of literature, people tried to appreciated Gou Jian`s work highly. That is because they hoped to raise the morale of revenge by celebrating Gou Jian. On the other hand, they hoped to get spiritual comfort from him, as they realized the realistic limit of revenge. I tried to determine that these kind of writing was one of healing which was relating to overcome the scars of war at that time.
