21 세기는 디지털 멀티디미어의 시대이다. 개인 검퓨터의 보급과 소프트웨어의 발달, 컴퓨터간에 형성된 네트웍은 멀티미디어 환경을 구축하고 이를 전파하는 배경이 됨으로써 정보 유통과정에서 질적인 변동을 야기 시켰다. 이러한 멀티미디어의 발달은 시간과 공간의 제약을 받지 않고 소비자에게 직접 다가갈 수 있으며 내용물에 대한 가공과 활용 등을 자유롭게 함으로써 Multimedia Contents의 사회적 확산을 촉진시켰다. 이러한 상황에 정보격차로 인하여 멀티미디어를 활용하지 못하는 멀티미디어 문맹이 나타나게 되었으며, 이들은 디지털 멀티미디어 환경에서 도태될 수 밖에 없다. 나날이 높은 성장률을 보이며 디지털 멀티미디어 컨텐츠 산업이 발전하고, 블로그, 미니홈피, UCC 와 같은 개인 미디어 시대의 도래로 누구나가 멀티미디어 컨텐츠를 생산할 수 있는 여건이 마련된 상황에서 일반인의 멀티미디어 활용능력이 필수적으로 요구되는 것이다. 따라서, 멀티미디어의 대중적인 발전에 맞추어 초·중·고 교육에 있어서도 단순한 워드프로세서나 컴퓨터 기본지식을 넘어 멀티미디어의 활용에 대한 교육이 일반화 되어야 한다. 또한 이와 더불어 기존세대에 대한 재교육이 필요한 시기이다.

21 century is the era of digital multimedia. Popularization of PC, development of S/W and network between computers established the multimedia environment. They`re also propagated the multimedia environment and caused to quantitative change of information flow. Development of multimedia accelerated social diffusion of multimedia Contents due to no restriction of time and space, direct contact to customers. It also makes processing and applications of contents easily. Under the circumstances, the multimedia ignorance who can`t use multimedia became to appear. They must fail to adapt in digital multimedia environment. Digital multimedia contents industry has been growing greatly and most people can produce multimedia contents like blog, mini homepage and UCC because of the incoming of personal media era. Therefore the public should use multimedia necessarily. In conclusion, education for using multimedia have to be generalized among elementary, middle and high schools besides a simple word processor and basic computer skills. And Re-education for older generation is also needed.
