과거 공간이 가지는 물질성을 비물질적으로 바꾸는 것은 공간의 경량화, 중성화, 투명화로 요약될 수 있다. 투명성은 균질화 된 공간의 피막을 제거함으로써 공간을 마치 질량을 지닌 물질이 아닌 것처럼 느끼게 하며 공간의 절대성과 영원성을 부정한다. 공간은 투명한 재료를 통해 풍부한 빛과 색채, 내부형태에 의한 공간의 유동, 시각적 투명성에 의한 공간의 상호 침투에 따라 확장되어 보이며, 시간과 공간의 한계를 탈피하여 고정적인 것에서 비 공정적인 것으로, 물질적인 것에서 탈 물질적인 것으로, 육중한 것에서 가벼운 것으로, 명확한 것에서 모호한 것 등의 새로운 환경으로 변화 시키고 있다. 즉, 건축공간에서 투명한 재료를 통해 풍부한 빛과 색채, 내부형태에 의한 공간의 유동, 시각적 투명성에 의한 공간의 상호 침투에 따라 공간이 비 물질성을 가진다. 모호한 경계, 확정적 투명성, 탈 형식적 공간은 근대건축에서 일관되게 시도해오던 공간의 위계와 질서, 통일성, 정합성, 균질성을 거부하고 새로운 실험을 시도 하고 있다. 이를 통해 공간을 일방적으로 수용하고 나누고 막는 고정적이고 구조 중심적 개념이 아니라 적극적으로 해석하고 참여함으로써 공간과 소통하고 사람과 사람의 소통을 유도하는 공간디자인의 시도가 지속적으로 이루어지길 기대한다.
