본 논문은 오늘날 문명의 대전환에 중심적인 역할을 하고 있는 나노에 관한 인문학적 성찰이다. 나노는 자연을 객관적으로 탐구하는 과학의 개념을 넘어 상상력과 창의성을 기반으로 하는 특징을 보여주고 있으며, 또한 시각적 패러다임의 전환을 주도하고 있다. 본고는 이러한 나노기술의 특징을 주사형터널링현미경 STM(Scanning Tunneling Microscope)이 원자를 다루는 방식을 통하여 고찰하고, 이것이 어떻게 시각적 패러다임의 전환을 가져오고 있는지를 밝힌다. STM 은 원자의 구조를 파악하고 개별적 조작을 가능하게 해준다. STM 의 특징은 감각의 과정을 통해 얻어지는 이미지로 원자세계를 볼 수 있게 해준다는 것이다. 이처럼 현미경을 통해 감각으로 느끼며 원자를 조작한다는 것은 보는 것의 패러다임의 전환을 말해준다. 즉 ‘봄’으로부터 ‘센싱’으로의 패러다임의 전환을 보여주는 것이다. 이러한 감각적 센싱으로부터 이제까지 볼 수 없었던 원자의 지형도 topograhphy 를 처음으로 볼 수 있게 되었고, 원자의 개별적 이미지를 보고, 이 원자들의 배열을 조작할 수 있음으로써 새로운 물질을 만들어낼 수 있는 가능성이 생긴 것이다. 나노기술에서는 보는 것과 아는 것을 동일시했던 서구의 전통적 시각중심주의가 만지고 느끼는 것이 곧 아는 것이라는 감각중심주의로 패러다임의 대전환이 이루어지고 있다. 나노기술은 결국 물질과 비물질, 실재와 상상의 이분법적 경계를 해체시킴으로써 하이브리드적 문화를 열고 있는 것이다

This paper offers a humanistic reflection on the nano technology that plays a central role in the great shift in civilization today. Nano incorporates features that are based on both imagination and creativity beyond the concept of science, which is to explore nature in an objective manner and lead a shift in the visual paradigm at the same time. This study examines the features of nano technology through the method used by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) in dealing with atoms, and discusses how it brings about a shift in the visual paradigm. The STM enables us to understand the structure of atoms and manipulate the individual atoms. It also allows us to see the world of atoms in a set of images obtained through the process of sensation. In this way, it indicates a shift in the paradigm of seeing in that we can sense an object and manipulate individual atoms through the microscope. In other words, this represents a paradigm shift from "seeing" to "sensing." As a result of such sensing, we are now able to see for the first time the topography of atoms that we had not been able to until now. As we can manipulate a sequence of atoms while viewing their individual images, it also has become possible to create a new substance. With the advent of nano technology, a great paradigm shift is taking place from the idea of traditional Western visualism that "to see is to know," to the idea of sensualism that "to touch and feel is to know."
