오늘날의 기계적, 환원주의적 틀에 갇힌 디자인 개념은 디자인계(design system)에 나타나는 복잡성과 비예측성, 다양성을 설명하는데 한계를 가지고 있다. 따라서 디자인을 결과가 아닌 과정, 부분이 아닌 전체로 보는 포괄적인 시각에서 새롭게 디자인의 개념을 밝히고 그 사고의 지평을 넓혀야 한다. 본 연구는 디자인에 대한 사고의 지평을 넓히기 위한 기반연구로서 자기조직화 이론을 통해 디자인계를 둘러싼 다양한 관계와 현상 속에 숨어 있는 규칙성이나 속성을 바탕으로 디자인계의 숨은 질서를 찾아보고자 하였다. 이를 통해 디자인계는 스스로 내부의 형식과 질서를 창출하는 자율적 자기조직 시스템으로써 자연계와 마찬가지로 결정된 실재가 아니라 오직 변화라는 끊임없는 흐름이 존재하는 과정적 체계로 인식될 수 있음을 밝혔고, 또한 디자인계에 나타난 분열, 분화, 해체, 다원적 양상은 또다른 변화의 가능성과 함께 새로운 질서의 출현을 위한 창조적 움직임임을 밝혔다.

The concept of design in modern times is trapped in the mechanical, reductionist framework and thus falls short of explaining the complexity, unpredictability and diversity of design system. Therefore, we need to adopt a more comprehensive perspective in seeing design in its entirety, not in parts, to understand the concept of design and extend the horizon of our ideas regarding design. This study is a meta-research extending the horizon of thinking about design. By employing the theory of self-organization, it attempted to find hidden order in a design system based on rules or characteristics of various relationships and phenomena taking place within a design system. Through this, this study clarified that a design system is a self-regulating, self-organizing system that generates its own internal forms and orders. It is not a determined existence, but rather, a procedural structure that includes the constant flow of changes. The study also explained that aspects of disintegration, segmentation, dissolution and divergence that are found in a design system serve to create movements for the emergence of new orders with possibilities of new changes.
