본 연구의 가장 중요한 목적은 디자인에서 공간의 의미를 정립하는데 있다. 공간에서 디자인을 논하는 것이 아니라 공간을 디자인의 요소로 상징화 하여 해석한다. 공간은 이미 여러 다른 학문분야에서 다양한 시각으로 연구되어왔다. 그 동안의 공간은 철학, 물리학, 과학 그리고 수학의 논리와 이치로만 탐구되어왔다. 그래서 본 연구는 공간을 역사적인 측면과 여러 다른 학문 분야별 정리를 통해 그 개념을 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 다양한 분야별 공간의 개념을 정리 분석한 후 디자인에서 공간의 의미를 정립하고자 한다.

The main purpose of this paper is to define the concept of space in design field. And it is converting space into design translating with symbolization of each elements of design. It is not discussing about design in terms of space terminology. In addition, the terms of space has been discussed and discovered in terms of philosophy, physics, science, and mathematics` theoretical concept so far. Space has been studied in various aspects of researching fields. So, this paper is identifying the various historical transitions of space to define the concept of space for design.
