Continuous development of digital technology shows a type of communication surpassing the imagination of artists and visitors. The advancement of digital media gave birth to a new type of art genre called "Interactive Art". The new genre of art also transformed the role of the visitor who was the unilateral receptor to an active participant or even a creator. The concept of public art where the public is the spectator is also changing with its scope expanding from a type of art enjoying objects displayed at a physical location to artworks used to promote social and cultural understanding. Public art targeting the public agrees with Interactive art in its concept and characteristics and it can become the most effective way to experience the message that the creative subject wants to convey. This paper aims at investigating the impression of citizens on the existing public art by conducting face-to-face interviews and discussed the need for interactive art as a genre of public art. Researcher actually described public art projects installed in years 2002 and 2004. The two artworks wanted to express the nature of location and identity of each space through participation of the public and incidental intervention. These artworks are examples that revealed the possibility of a new type of public art. The advantages of interactive artworks as public art lie in the fact that a wider range of contents may be displayed than in a certain hardware system. Accordingly, the public of this age that live with "open thoughts" aspires for "open art" in an "open space" and interactive art can fulfill the need of such public art.
