이 연구는 동료 평가를 통하여 전라북도, 충청북도, 강원도의 주요 공과대학 수준을 전국 최고 공과대학과의 비교에 의거하여 평가한 것으로, 대학의 평판도와 교수진, 전공교육, 취업교육, 학교지원 그리고 시설 등 모두 여섯 가지 주요항목으로 측정하였다. 지역 최고 공과대학과 각 분야 전국 최고 공과대학 간의 격차는 상당한 것으로 분석되었다. 이 연구는 기존 타 분야에서의 지역격차가 공과대학 수준이라는 차원에도 작용하고 있다는 사실을 보여준다. 이 연구는 동시에 포항공대(POSTECH)와 한국과학기술원(KAIST)의 경우와 같이 비수도권에 소재한 전국 최고 수준의 공과대학들이 이러한 지역격차를 극복할 수 있는 가능성도 보여주고 있다.

Through peer review, this research measures the quality of engineering colleges located in Jeollabukdo, Chungcheongbuk-do, and Gangwon-do. The surveyed items are as follows: reputation, faculty, academic education, practical education, support, and facility. Best engineering colleges in these regions have significant lower quality compared to the best ones nationally. The findings show that the regional disparity in general affects the quality of engineering college as well. However, our research also found out that the disparity can be at least partially overcome as the success of POSTECH and KAIST shows. Even though they are located in non-capital region, they are competitive nationally.
