인간의 마음에는 논리와 심리가 얽혀있다. 심리상담은 마음에의 심리적 영향을 직접적으로 이해하게 해주고 철학상담은 논리가 작동되지 않는 부분을 확인하게 하여 마음에의 심리적 영향을 간접적으로 확인할 수 있게 해준다. 철학상담은 논리가 작동되지 않는 영역을 확인하는 것에 그치지 않고 그 부분에서 논리가 제대로 작동되면 어떠한 결론에 이르게 되는가를 인식하게 할 수 있다는 강점을 가진다. 내담자의 자생적 판단력이 제고되도록 한다는 점이 철학상담이 심리상담과 변별되는 중요한 특징이다. 보다 객관적으로, 보다 보편적으로 사고하도록 생각하는 방법을 오랫동안 수련한 철학자들이 철학적 성찰력을 활용해 일상의 문제에 부딪쳐 고민하는 사람이 보다 폭넓게 생각해서 좋은 결정을 내릴 수 있도록 돕는 철학상담은 철학의 본연의 역할을 회복하고자 하는 철학실천의 한 분야이다. 철학상담의 정체성과 관련한 논의는 3가지 논점으로 압축된다. 첫 번째, 철학상담의 최근 류는 철학인가, 상담인가? 두 번째, 철학상담은 교육인가, 교육이 아닌가? 세 번째 철학상담은 치료인가, 치료가 아닌가? 이 세 가지 질문에 대해서 본 논문에서는 철학상담은 교육이나 치료를 의도하지는 않지만 철학상담이 제대로 기능할 경우 결과적으로 교육효과와 치료효과를 거둘 수 있는 철학실천임을 주장하고자 한다.

Logic and psychology are tangled in human being`s heart. Psychological counseling helps counselee understand one`s own mind directly, but philosophical counseling helps counselee understand one`s own mind indirectly. Psychological counseling explain counselee`s psychological state directly, but philosophical counseling explain counselee`s mind by helping counselee recognize the part of one`s mind which is not functioning logically. Philosophical counseling has a strong point in helping counselee recognize correct logical functioning in mind. Philosopher who has trained in thinking more universally and more objectively can help counselee think more widely and find a better solution about everyday life`s matters. Philosophical counseling is differentiated from psychological counseling in improving counselee`s thinking skill. Philosophical counseling is a sphere of philosophical practice which does philosophical natural role. The criticism about identity of philosophical counseling is arranged as three point. First, is philosophical counseling a sphere of philosophical practice or a sphere of counseling? Second, is philosophical counseling education or not? Third, is philosophical counseling therapy or not? I argue philosophical counseling is a philosophical practice which has educational effect and therapeutic effect.
