이 글에서는 兪吉濬이 <西遊見聞>(1895)에서 서구 문화를 어떻게 받아들이고 있는지를 살펴보기 위하여, 文明開化論者로서의 생각이 가장 잘 반영되어 있는 政府, 敎育 관련 텍스트를 대상으로 하여 이곳에 실린 어휘의 범주, 빈도, 품사, 사용 양상 등을 분석하여 특성을 이해한 후, 이들 어휘를 중심으로 兪吉濬이 서구 문화를 어떻게 이해하고 받아들이고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 이를 통하여 텍스트의 구조와 어휘의 관계에 주목하여 <西遊見聞>에 수록된 어휘를 이해하고 <西遊見聞>의 내용을 이해해 보고자 하였다. 이런 방법에 따라 어휘를 고찰한 결과 政府 관련 어휘에서는 정치, 입법, 사법, 징세에 관한 것, 敎育 관련 어휘에서는 교육 자체, 학교, 구성원, 관련 기관, 학술 과목에 관한 것이 사용 빈도가 높음을 통해서 兪吉濬이 이들 어휘에 초점을 맞추고 이들을 주로 활용하여 텍스트를 기술하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이런 범주의 어휘로부터 兪吉濬이 중요하게 생각했던 구체적인 요소를 추출한 후, 각각의 범주에 속한 어휘가 의미, 품사 면에서 어떤 특색을 보이고 어떤 어휘와 관련을 맺고 있는지를 살핌으로써 <西遊見聞>의 어휘에 대한 이해를 시도해 보았다. 이런 어휘 분석의 결과를 통하여 兪吉濬이 임금과 국민이 같이 다스리는 정치 체제를 선호하였고 영국의 체제를 이상적으로 여겼다는 점과 국민들의 정치 참여를 위해서는 교육을 중시했음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 政府는 백성들을 태평하게 하는 데 직분이 있고, 과도하지 않게 적정한 역할을 해야 하며, 정부의 여러 사업을 위해서는 세금을 잘 거두고 쓰는 것을 중시했다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 敎育과 관련해서는 道德, 才藝, 工業 교육을 중시하고 영유아 교육이 중요하다고 생각하였다는 것과 정부는 교육 제도와 법을 세워 권리와 의무를 다해야 서구와 같은 발전이 이루어질 수 있다고 보았음을 알 수 있었다.

The aim of this paper is to study on aspect of acceptance Western culture in Seoyugyeonmun(1895). To this end, we studied government and educational text that was reflected as Westernization advocate. First, analyzed category of words, frequency, width of privare properties, use patterns, and understand the charecteristics were analyzed. And we investigated Yu Giljun`s understanding and acceptance of Westen culture by these words. We have to study vocabulary, according to the results, we can see that government in the political vocabulary, legislative, judicial, not about taxation have been used. And we can see that vocabulary education itself, schools, member, agencies, and academic subjects have been used too. Yu Giljun focused on these words, these words were mainly technology utilizes text. So we use the vocabulary categorized thought Yu Giljun significantly picked specific elements. And words that belong to each category and by nay means of any pary of speech, the vocabulary related to what looked to see if entered into. And we understand those aspects of the vocabulary used in Seoyug-yeonmun, tried to understand the vocabulary. The results of these through lexical analysis, we suggest that the following points. First, Yu Giljun preferred the constitutional monarchy system. Second, Yu Giljun preferred UK`s political system as a ideal political system. Third, Yu Giljun thought that the education of the people is important. With regard to education, Yu Giljun thought morality, talent and art, industry education and early childhood education was seriously. And Yu Giljun thought that educational system and how the government established the government does not run out the rights and obligations of the development can not be done, such as western.
